I realize that if TSHTF, doing things "right" may be a luxury few can afford, but I've always used oils rather than greases on my guns, and for my semi-auto handguns, I just rack the slide a few times after oiling, wipe down the exterior, let the gun sit overnight, and then repeat the rack-and-wipe before shooting or carrying it. For rifles, after oiling, I usually prop them up against something with a rag underneath, but basically the same process.
