Wiring question

You are right Black to black and white to whits, green is ground. Sounds like you are going to just splice the two wires. You can do that and just ignore the ground wire. What you should do is disconnect the controller wire at the box and hook up a new one piece wire that is long enough.

If the original controller plug has the large and small small prongs, you should hook it up the same way as the original.
