Best all around rifle

I'm trying to decide what rifle to purchase as a "tool" rifle. Not for war or urban defense but to put food on the table and possibly rare medium range defensive fire. I have an ancient Remington .22 semi inherited from my great grandfather that I love but it has a tendency for jams and even after I finally figure out how to fix it, I wouldn't trust it with my life. Would a more modern .22 semi be a good choice? Should I look at a different caliber? A customized AR? I had a bushmaster patrolman AR that was fun as heck, sold it several months ago. Didn't think much of it for hunting but maybe others have different experiences. I'm looking for a gun that would have wide hunting use, reliable, and able to pack a reasonable to large amount of ammo. Any help or suggestions are welcomed
