For those who understand the law enforcement system, what role does the Sheriff play in a major city that has it's own police force? So from what I see, the Sheriff is non existent in a city, besides maybe in a county court or other county building that is within the city. But there they are really limited to that building, acting as guard of that particular building. It seems to me Sheriff's have the more traditional law enforcement role in the smaller cities that don't have a police department.
But Sheriffs are elected for the WHOLE county?
Also is there a time where the Sheriff department got into a legal conflict with a city or state?
I am asking this because in the conservative and prepper community there is lots of emphasis on the Sheriffs. But I honestly don't understand the significance or a Sheriff if something like 3/4 of Americans live in a city.
I am sure I am missing something.
