Computer speaker wire extension questions

I have a nice desk top computer that I use for just about everything. I do all my business related work on it, as well as for personal use. I often listen to documentaries, talk radio, music, etc. on YouTube and other online channels. Here is my dilemma.

I have a nice Logitech speaker system for my computer, this one:

It's not extreme high quality, but it's more than adequate for what I use it for. I do not want to replace it at this time.

It has a black male jack on the back of the large speaker and a wire about 2' long which plugs into the back of the computer and has a green male jack on the end of it (I have a Dell computer that is about two years old). In other words, the cable that goes from the computer to the speaker has a male jack on each end.

I want to be able to listen to whatever is on the computer in the back of the house by adding a couple of speakers back there. This is a large, old house and it is designed such that sound does not carry well down the hallway. I can have the computer speakers turned all the way up out front in the main room and it be barely audible in the back.

Can I buy a 50' roll of the wire with 3.5mm jacks, and then buy a 3.5mm Y-splitter with one male end and two female ends? I was thinking I could plug the male end of the splitter into the back of the computer, then plug the male end coming from the large speaker into one of the female ends and then plug the male end of an extension wire into the other female end. Then run the extension wire down the hall to the back (my bedroom) and connect it to a pair of speakers back there with another splitter.

Will this work? Any issues I should be aware of? Anyone done this?

This is an area I don't know too much about. Would there be interference? Will the signal weaken or be distorted by the splitters or wire length?

And before anyone asks, I don't want to go wireless. Too much money and headache.

I don't need symphony quality sound. I just want decent sound in the back of the house.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
