Commercial v. Private Survival Communities

There is, of course, an on-going discussion related to whether or not survival communities are a good idea or not, but there are also commercial developers putting together survival communities. What are your thoughts related to the advisability of living in a community v. living with your family and also, should one consider purchasing a membership in a survival community that is being commercially developed.
