Increasing AM-FM reception

Looking for information on how to increase the range of reception for a typical small AM/FM radio.

Would stringing a wire high between two trees work? How would one bring the signal into the radio?

I guess this is a simple question but if one needed to use an AM/FM as their only source of information increasing reception might be useful.
