Since youre asking about factory, I assume you dont reload. If not, 45/70 isnt a bad round to start on. I think you'll find, something like a lightweight, single shot, will be much more pleasant to shoot if you do, and you'll be able to afford to shoot it enough to be good with it.
I have a Ruger #3 in 45/70, and grew up shooting it, or I should say, trying not to shoot it, mainly because my dad didnt reload for it, and insisted on buying heavyweight factory rounds for it. It flat out sucked to shoot. When he died, I almost let it go. Figured Id give it one more try, and loaded up some 300 grain RNFP lead bullets over a load of Trail Boss.
Im glad now I didnt get rid of it. Very pleasant to shoot now, accurate, and even the "light" loads, should be plenty for deer at reasonable ranges.
