Just comment on Ukraine
Found this a little funny.
https://abcnews.go.com/International...ry?id=62038641
Bear in mind the exit polls came in and he was in first place ahead of Poroshenko (incumbent president) and Tymoshenko (previous Ukrainian president).
He plays a president on TV (as a comedian). It was something like 30% of the vote for him, 17% for tymoshenko and 64% turnout
He is for joining the EU and NATO via referendums. For the EU he wants to join within 5 years.

Starting an St Louis group
I'm moving to the city area soon and have not found any groups advertised. Figured I'd start one.
I'm most interested in having meetups to train, trade skills, shoot, get out into the bush, etc. I want to get a good group to talk about surviving in an urban or suburban environment and otherwise shoot the breeze.
I'm in my late 20s, about to be out of the military (12 years a combat medic). All experience levels welcome, just as long as you've got a mindset to hit the range with a goal and a work ethic. I'm willing to teach, but more important I'm willing to learn.
Reply here or PM is fine. You can also email at [email protected]

When the Yield Curve Inverts, Does the Market Hurt?
A short-term inversion occurred in 1998 when the economy was much weaker but the U.S. was recession free for another three years. The inversions that occurred prior to the 1990 and 2008 recessions lasted multiple months and were deeper than the recent inversion.
So far, most of the Wall Street talking heads are dismissing the inversion but that's whan many did in 2007. They may be right because the labor market remains extremely strong although there are some recent signs of a cool down in manufacturing. Any thoughts?

Let's talk Yaesu FT-817/818 for portable comms
So last week I bought a Yaesu FT-818ND. Haven't put it through the paces yet but I'm happy with what I see so far. I really like the small size; coupled with a small wire antenna, it's easily manpackable...much more so than any other radio with comparable capability than I've found. (But I'm new to ham so I certainly may have missed something.)
Prices are low at Ham Radio Outlet right now. $600 new...much cheaper than Amazon.
https://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-016097
Re: "comparable capability," I want to be able to transmit on all modes on all frequencies. Many radios are all freq, but the modes on each freq can be limited...no AM or SSB at 144MHz, for example.
Of course, the tradeoff for a compact size is low power...max 6W. And if you use the AA option, it automatically drops to 2.5W. Another slight inconvenience is that (buried in page 9 of the manual is says) you can't operate the radio while using the 120V battery charger. But you can operate and charge the battery at the same time if you use an external DC power source. That's not important while using it in the field, but it's a limitation for home use that I wasn't aware of when I bought it.
Anyway, I'm interested in what folks here have done to tailor their 817/818s to their unique kits. How do you carry it, ham-in-a-box builds, what's the best antenna for different situations in mobile use, anyone use an inline amplifier for more power at home, etc.?

lower class has no damned biz having kids
you have to clear 70k a year to have a kid, and raise them properly in the US. You need 1/4 mill in the bank first, too. So you're not foisting off the costs of raising the kid onto the taxpayers. I hear all this crying about can't afford rent, medical, etc, because of the kids. Well, you shouldnt have HAD the kids, knowing that you were not financially set up to do so. Which makes you a stupid, selfish a-hole for having done so, condemning your own kids to poverty, thru lack of proper education and guidance. When you aint got kids, you can live in a van or an 18 wheeler for a few years, go where the work is, put in lots of overtime, have a lot of savings. Invest it right, and then you can afford to adopt a 5 year old Asian kid. Even easier, you can move to Asia and retire, marrying a single mother. There's nothing special about your genes (or anyone else's).

keep housing cost to one weeks' take home pay
Everyone in the low and low-middle class should just own old minivans, and live in their vehicles for 2 months of spring, 2 months of fall. That would drive down rents by half. The great majority of housing was paid off decades ago. Nearly very dime that the landlord gets is pure profit. They'll take half as much vs nothing, the buildings burning, being looted, vandalized, etc. if you discover you can live 4 months of the year in a van, you might well decide to just keep on avoiding rent, and the landlords wont want to risk your coming to think in that manner.

Big china pivot
This is the biggest pivot since it became a IMF reserve currency after the USD and EURO. In 2016.
Now the weird thing is China has like over 1 trillion in reserve assets, cash/gold etc... so why start taking in foreign bond funds??
Their bond market is about 13 Trillion meanwhile 100 Billion is expected to be raised from non Chinese fund managers.

Mechanized Cavalry - M60 vs M2HB vs M191
Quote:
Im looking at getting a rebuilt M998 HMMWV. Its a full restore with 6.2L. Im liiking at augmented armor packages and at worst will armorcore the interior myself if necessary.
Now this vehicle will fit in my garage and be used to get me and my family from my homestead to my bunker at an undisclosed location about 60mi away. Im looking at weapons systems and am stuck betwen a few in the 20-60k range. My financial situation is changing rapidly and I originally thought an M1919A4 would be perfect, but now Im thinking an M60 or M2HB would be better goven my better financial postion, if the extra expenses buys a significant increase in reliability, easy of use, maintenence, etc. My question to those with a mechanized cavalry background, did you prefer .308 or .50? Am I better off with the M60 or M2HB...or for 1/3 the price will the M1919 be just fine? The M240 is too expensive. Also I have the time and patience to have the M60 uograded to E3 or E4, or have us ord upgrade the M2HB to M2A1 or A2 and 1919A4s are a dime a dozen. Any input is appreciated. Remember this is going to be used as a light armored personal domestic transport vehicle, that needs to run on diesel, hit highway speeds, fit in a garage, have some sustained deterrant firepower, mitigate small arms fire, and have a range of around 60-100mi at minimum. And what weapons system would you recommend? I will be adding an MP5A2 and M16A1 to the inside of the vehicle..but that is another conversation all together. In the meantime Im going ro use my SWD M11/Nine with Lage MAX-11/15 witha pibtle mount and 100rd Surefires or betas...but Id prefer a real beltfed option moving forward. Thank you in advance. |
2nd: Look for a real gun truck. M114 / M1151. You would be better off with 2 of them. One all by itself may look cool, have value for show and tell, etc....but tactical value is extremely limited.
Fwiw. .....
I had 2 M114 trucks at one time in Iraq. One had an M240 while the other had an M2 with M249 in tandem mount. Later on in this deployment, all of them were replaced with Estonian Army MG3 machine guns. 19s aint the only folks with guntrucks.
Anywhoos........
The advantages of mounting an M60 , M240, or better yet...an MG3 ( MG3 wont feed Nato disintegrating links well if the gas regulator is cranked up. Keep it at 1 to 3 or use non disinigrating links.
1. The weapon can quickly be dismounted and utilized by one member of the gun crew.
2. The load plan will or should incorporate 2 to 3 times the amount in 7.62 Nato link compared to 50 bmg. Urban fighting increases to 4-5 times the amount.
3. MG3 only......Rate of fire , and reliability.. M240 is a distant 2nd. M2A1 followed by M2. To cut to the chase here ....M60 dead last.
M2 advantages = Everything else. ( Hint.....A short burst will turn an M114, BRDM or BMP into junk in very short order.)
MK19: You didn’t ask so Ill leave it out.Same with the PKM, RPD, etc...
The Crow system is worth every penny .
Notes:
Dump the M16A1 if this is some sort of historic recreation. M16A2 would be a better choice for historical accounts. If you lock up an MG3, you will want a Galil. ( To be exact.....a South African R4)
M2 still needs a tripods/ pintle and TnE to give it a ground mounting option. Truck will need the correct chicken plate.
Link fed guns are not expensive compared to thier ammo bill. Uncle Sam has and still pays for mine...lol.
Be careful adding armor to an actual 998. The org suspension wont handle it for long. Same with the brakes , engine, tranny, etc.....
Look for a MG called a MAG 58. May save you some coin and essentially the same gun as an M240.
Skip on the M240 " Lima " Go with a "bravo".
If you use an M240, M60, or MG3 from a bipod, learn what the term bracing means and employ it anytime you actually want to hit something with the first burst.
Burst rate with an M60 or M240 is easy to remember......( Kill a family of 5.)
M80A1 ammunition is a huge improvement.
Good luck.

Hi I'm looking for information on building a shipping container home. I want to combine shipping container home with an earth ship home. I know you can't just burry the container without the gridiron walls. Can you "burry" the home like that? Also any information on the support for the top of the container? |
By the time you got it strengthened enough to safely bury it you will have spent more than just building an underground room the right way with concrete block walls.
Shipping containers go above ground.
Look into buried dome homes instead.

So I'm working out again
Even if I didn't care about my own health (I do), I need to be in top shape.
So.
He bought me weight, weight bench, squat cage, etc. as a wedding present years ago. We also have a recumbent bike he bought used. It works great and I am under the weight limit.
I also (embarrassed to admit) have one of those plastic fitness steps, you go up and down on the thing. I also have some Walk Away the Pounds DVDs.
I am doing a combo of weights and cardio, working my way up because I still have to take care of him, run the business, and be functional.
Today was back/leg day. I also did some cardio. I had planned to do 10 minutes on the bike (like I said, working my way up) and 10 minutes on the step, but the step killed me after 3 minutes and I crawled off to the weights.
I like dumbbell, barbell exercises because you don't need a machine, but I was told years ago to make a point of working my quads so I do that on the leg extension thing.
Any suggestions? I don't really care about getting hot - the only man I'm with finds me appealing, but I am wanting to focus on strength.
So I'm working out again

Closing the border, good or bad?
Shutting the borders will not stop of the 'asylum seekers' making it in [after paying a nice amount to coyotes and misc. Mexican officials who are also being paid by the coyotes]. Where there isn't a 'legit' government the various gangs/cartels take their cut.
The asylum seekers will not be stopped.
BUT more legitimate business will be stopped [this includes smuggling of drugs, animals, etc]. How much money does Mexico make from legitimate business as opposed to the asylum seekers?
How many people will be complaining to the Mexican government [oh, and ours too] about the loss of their money?
How many general graft and corruption will be impacted in Mexico's economy? [say a packing firm somewhere else in Mexico. No products crossing. They shut down. Employees not paid. Employees no longer can pay protection and misc. governmental graft. Company doesn't pay the inspectors for a 'pass' because nothing is happening. Company doesn't pay government/cartels for safe passage of the trucks to and from their plant. Company doesn't pay truckers and they don't pay whomever they pay to get around -- much less for food/gas/and money for their families.
Who screams first? The Mexican government? The Mexican cartels?
Do the government officials and cartel thugs [not much difference really] hit the asylum seekers up for more to make up for their losses? Do the asylum seekers thus not have enough to pay for the coyotes, or rides to unguarded sections, and set up more and more camps in Mexican cities....extrapulate from that as you will.
Asylum seekers will get through. But those will be those essentially already along the border. Can Soros pay everyone who wants their piece? Can Soror pay everyone who wants their extra piece since normal graft/extortion is halted?
But, frankly, think it would be best to stop all wire transfers and western union transfers to anything south of the border. Put up everything has to be investigated to make sure it isn't going to cartels and gangs -- how many are sending money back to families in say Hondorus which ends up in MS13 whatever gang's hands. Do you think anyone can get money without those groups knowing it and hitting up the families for their cut? Blame money laundrying. Tax fraud. Everything including the kitchen sink.
And close the border so that possible money laundrying, sex trafficking money, drug money, tax fraud money, kitchen sink money won't travel via travelers from the US.
Keep sending SS money [lots of retirees down there. That's direct deposit easy to control and watch]. Send extra money to the US embassy to bail out US citizens -- only if they leave Mexico -- take away the US dollar and see what happens. Even Soros couldn't cover that.
Closing the border, good or bad?

GHB When You Work Close To Home
However, I did think how easy it would be to forget these, and presume that getting home would be easy, and supplies would be there when I did arrive home. That we need to consider that we can't get home, even if we work close to the house. That maybe we need to be as prepared as those who work miles away.
For instance I have been stopped within a 10 minute walk of my house, due to train derailments, flooding etc. I was almost within throwing distance of the house, but couldn't get there and had to wait for hours, or go on a longer alternative route home.
I'd love to hear from others who work within a few miles of home, what they do/think etc.

Federal judge in California rules 10-round limit on magazines is UNCONSTITUTIONAL
I'm not an expert and anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, but some digging shows this Judge Roger Benitez who wrote the decision is from the "United States District Court for the Southern District of California". 3rd level from the top on this chart, where it says "94 Districts":
If I'm right, this decision only affects CA, but an appeal would go to the 9th District Court of Appeals, 2nd from the top. Decisions from the 9th affect more states, including Washington and Oregon.
If we are lucky, it will go to the the next level up, to the Supreme Court, and they will make a decision that affects the entire country, not just CA or the region affected by the 9th.

Words of Wisdom From Rush Limbaugh
Like they said...quit trying to be nice, because the fact is, THEY quit being nice...or even American... a long way back. You aren’t going to persuade them, you aren’t going to convince them.
Like a little kid that won’t see reason but keeps trying to argue based on total BS...at some point you need to quit arguing, let them know their argument is totally without merit, it is over, and they can stop, or you send them to their room.
Same thing here. Their BS is totally ridiculous, as Mike Lee pointed out so very well the other night in the Senate. It’s not worth even arguing about, and they need to shut up, sit down and remain quiet until they have something constructive to offer.
Call them as you see them, and let the chips fall as they may. Drown out their insanity with so much truth that they can’t compete. Every melted snowflake or exploded leftist head is a small win for America.

Who made the great advances?
The simple fact of the matter is that Western civilization is responsible for the vast majority of scientific, technological, and philosophical discover and creativity. But we have also proven the most tolerant of other cultures, inviting them to share in our abundance, at the expense of our own well-being. We now allow those cultures to dictate terms to us, and we openly defer to peoples who, prior to contact with the West, often barely had two sticks to rub together.
I'm not saying that there is nothing that we can learn from other cultures, just that there is a reason why the rest of the world adopted more from the West than we have from them, and that is for a very good reason: people choose the best solution.
To emphasize the point, consider Native Americans, who were, prior to Europeans' arrival in North America, a smattering of Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age cultures. So many of them claim to have been eradicated by whites, or to have been forced to intermarry, yet the simple truth of the matter is much simpler: hypergamy. Marrying "up." When faced with the choice between living in a tent and burning buffalo dung for fuel versus living in a house on a farm and having abundant food and the best technology, guess which one many of them chose? That's the reason why, if you add up the number of 1/8th Cherokees and 1/16th Arapahos and 1/4 Iroquois, and add them to the number of full blooded natives, the number of Native Americans is not only higher today than it ever was, but is hugher than the number that could ever have been sustained by their lifestyle.
Who made the great advances?

Be forewarned comrades; any incident where a "white supremacist" or "white nationalist" is involved will immediately bring ridicule. Both those ideas are historically the property of the Dem party and the left in America. There is nothing right wing about them. Also, any incident where a (neo) Nazi is involved will bring ridicule. Dryfood - Remember to test out your stores
Oddly fermenting and sprouting seems to make things a lot easier on the stomach if switching to a dry food diet after eating processed foods and fresh foods.
Just want to let people know to actually use their dried foods for a couple weeks every so often to see what it would be like if SHTF.
I am also very surprised how long my preps are lasting I spent $200 in December on dried foods, and the stuff is lasting a lot longer than I expected. I a was thinking I would run out of food by around now, but it seems that I would not be surprised if I made it into May or June at this point - however my main go tos, rice and wheat flour are running low - probably another two or three weeks worth, after that it is mostly just beans and legumes. However the one benefit of having Indian roommates is that they use alternative grinds and flours like chick peas that I am learning how to better use.
Also slow cooking dried food makes for a change from boiled dried foods or refried dried foods.
For sprouts it is a delicate process to get just enough water for the stuff to sprout, but I am having a real problem with white - I think bacterial / mold growing on the stuff - I think in part due to having the entire area full of food bacterials from my fermenting. None the less the point of this message was to remind people to actually use their preps from time to time to let their bodies adjust to the change of food digestion. Going to a high fiber raw food diet out of no where can be rough on the system.

Entry-Level Portable Ham Radio EMCOMM Kit
http://www.tothewoods.net/Comms-vehi...EMCOMM-kit.php
It's written for new-ish hams who aren't yet willing to invest in one of the big three's handhelds--Yaesu, Kenwood, ICOM. That's more than a lot of people are willing to spend, especially as a first step into the hobby, so I started with two Baofengs and some relevant accessories for each vehicle...antenna upgrades, better batteries with flexible charging options, etc.
I'm not arguing that Baofengs are the answer to everything or are better than the big three...just that they're adequate for a beginner. I just bought a Yaesu FT-818ND and will get a Yaesu handheld at some point, but I still consider the Baofengs useful additions. I can leave them in the cars without a financial burden, and I care a lot less if I drop a $50 radio into the river than a $150 Yaesu, and for the price of two Yaesus I can outfit ten people with adequate comms.
So I see the Baofengs as a separate capability from the nicer, more expensive radios...an entirely different category even though they're all handhelds, just like how three commuter cars are a different capability than one Porsche for the same price.
Anyway, have a look if you'd like, and I'm interested in feedback if you have any.

SHTF medical storage?
The trauma bag I keep is hands off to family as most in there they cant use, Rx and sharps. The "big red bag" as it is known is my burn kit, PPE gels water gauzes some meds gear and more; family can use this in an emergency ONLY... so I can keep it sterile and accounted, it is on a shelf in the garage. The HOME first aid kit is all access and is kept in the cupboard, Just let me know when you grab something. I will shuffle materials between them based on my needs.
They are broken down this way so they can be carried. Those do not include the car, boat, and camping kits which look like off the shelfs with added materials they lack as they stay with the vehicles.
Take some classes, everything from basic first aid to more advanced. I have, but as of yet never removed a bullet or stitched a knife wound. If it needs more than steristrips I am going to a professional that has had more time on than me. If I had to I could do more depending on the situation but that will be a call made then.

Naked-seeded pumpkins
I've tried these in the past and did not get a good yield with our poor soil. Last year, my wife gave some extra care to the Lady Godiva type naked-seeded pumpkin hills and they produced very well for us. We just finished processing the last of the pumpkins this month. The first ones ripened in late July/early August last year, so they store very well. We only had one pumpkin go bad over the winter, and the ones processed in March only had a couple of sprouted seeds inside.
The pumpkin fruits are not very big, just ~3 lbs each. They start off green and orange striped, then get more orange the longer they are off the vine. They were great for fall decorations. Here is a pumpkin after storage.
The best part about growing these plants are the seeds. The naked-seeded types have been bred to have no shell around the seeds, so all you have to do is cut the pumpkin, scoop the seeds out and rinse off the pumpkin guts through a strainer. The cleaned up easily and dried out nicely after a couple of hours on screens in the Excalibur dryer. Finish air drying for another day if you are storing them. Each pumpkin contains about a half cup of the seeds.
Great snacks and a good nutrient profile, with quite a few minerals.
Each vine produced ~3-6 pumpkins. We'll be planting more of them this year. I need to do a better job on controlling the pollination. We grow zucchini every year (Black Beauty) which is also a Cucurbita pepo variety, so I will use masking tape on some of the flowers for each type to keep them closed until I can hand pollinate fruits for seed-saving/planting the following years. These will be great to add to the local seed library.

'Trump Owns the Economy Now, for Better or Worse'
Quote:
"Between taxes, trade, and the Federal Reserve, President Trump is getting exactly what he wants on the economy. But while he boasts about last year's economic growth, there are signs that his most dependable talking point is eroding." |
But Trump doesn't get everything he wants, and everything is connected to the economy. What about Trump's many tweets stating that the wall would save the US money, because illegal immigration costs the US lots of money? Baseless?
We're not allowed to totally confront enemy nations like China--- famous for intellectual property theft--- partially because Trump's predecessors worked hard to undermine our stance. That's got to have something to do with the economy.
And the economy has to do with more than just Trump. For instance, marijuana legalization would have been a big new industry for New Jersey, and would have produced a lot of tax money. But New Jersey decided not to legalize it. Maybe they're better off, but you can't claim it wouldn't have a big economic effect.
If there weren't so many badguys around domestically, everyone in the US might look at marijuana legalization a lot differently. It might be a lot less potentially damaging. There might have been a lot more legalization by now.
And if the US federal government weren't so undermined, we might have a much better response to attempted immigration, China's attacks against our economy, and radical Islam.
Just look at how costly our Middle East wars are. We're spending all that, and spending all that time, yet leaving the radical Muslim nations extant. And our military men are coming home dead, disabled, or turning into drug addicts.

soap for contaminated water?
Had enogh stored water for drinking and cooking, but was nice to still use the toliet and flush, most of the time.
It was hot,and even with cold water ,it was a blessing to take a shower or 2 every day.Was careful not to get any in my mouth or eyes,or have any open cuts.
Not sure why I'm thinking of this 2 years later, but I am.
I store a lot of original blue dawn soap, and used it a lot for cleaning and washing, and showers.
Just looking for input or comments on anything to do different,or actual risks of of washing my body this way?
Used mainly disposible plates/eating utensils..the few pans/plates I made sure to disinfect with a bleach rinse.

Teardrop Interior Galley vs Exterior
Personally, I'm leaning towards exterior just because I don't really feel an urgent need to cook inside when on the road compared to having more interior space for sleep and stuff.

Good evening!
Very happy to have found this site.... the more I learn, the more I realize I don't know! Currently in southern Idaho, but looking to relocate to a permanent homestead within the next year. Wasn't in the same mind set when I purchased my current home... thinking most likely Missouri. Looking forward to a lot of great shared information. ☺️
Good evening!

Two Types of Seeds to Stockpile for SHTF
First question someone may ask is about nutrition; what crops would provide the most nutrition per acre? Another question may be about spring or fall crops? Maybe one of the first questions we may want to ask ourselves is about preservation. What are some of the easiest crops to preserve, and are time tested?
To answer that question we turn to the past. Some of my long time readers know we going to reach for a history book for this article. The book in question is "The Middle Ages Everyday Life in Medieval Europe by Jeffery Singman, page 57.

Which Brand of Canned Chili is Best?
However, the last couple of times I bought chili, I got Armour brand w/ Beans. Mainly from a sense of nostalgia, because that's what my mother always bought when I was a kid back in the '70s.
Eating a bowl of Armour chili with saltines, and reading the latest issue of "GI Combat" or "Sgt Rock" comics. That's what I remember from those days.
