Seed Storage for Next Year

Although I won't have a garden this year, I want to get some heirloom veggie, herb, and flower seeds and put them up for next year in case seeds are hard to come by. I was thinking of just putting the envelopes in a clean new paint can, adding a packet of silica desiccant, then pounding the lid on and storing in a cool, dry place (not the freezer or Mom will find it "looking around").

Does this sound like it'll work?
