For a long term domicile, able to handle the changing sizes of a multigenerational family, what would be more logical?
A) A large boarding house, with 6+ adult sized bedrooms
B) A complex of 2-4 "master suites" (granny flats) + one common area
C) A modest house with external efficiency apartment suites
D) Large farmhouse style, with capacity to house & feed 10 - 16 people
( ) Your idea here -
The goal is to have a house one can comfortably spend a life in without being forced out by finances, handicaps, etc.
While family is growing, expand into spare spaces. When family is shrinking, rent spare spaces.
When family all gone, move into one of the efficiencies, and rent out the "main" building, etc.
While growing up, I vaguely recall one large extended family that had a married couple, 7 children, 1 grandmother, 2 maiden aunts, and 1 uncle, living together in a large house. I recall how cozy it was in their kitchen, with its coal stove pumping out the heat on a cold wintry day, and a big dining table seating the throng. They seemed happy, for the most part.
