Terrifying movies this Halloween

So, you want to be terrified with a good horror movie that will make you have trouble sleeping, feel sick to your stomach, and give you the creeps this alls-hallows season?? Try these very scary films.

Setting. Turn off all distractions, get your favorite snacks, crawl under a blanket, turn off the lights, and turn on the film and watch it without distractions. Engage in it and let yourself be immersed. These are listed in no particular order, just as I think of them.

[I highly value plot, setup, acting, believably, thinking, and substance over mindless slashing and torture.]

1. Alien. The 1970s classic. [If you like this, the sequel Aliens is excellent but less horror and more sci-fi action. And if you like Aliens, I'd recommend also 1980s Predator, which is another sci-fi action thriller. Avoid all others in this universe as they are big disappointments.]
2. The Thing. The 1982 version, John Carpenters masterpiece remake of the old black and white version.
3. Hereditary.
4. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The 1970s classic is so unbelievably disturbing it is one of the scariest film I've seen. It has some very disturbing scenes.
5. Event Horizon. Very scary.
6. Paranormal Activity. The original. Good luck going to sleep after watching this. If you like it, there's many in the series that are generally very good. The 4th one caused me night terrors... FYI...
7. The Exorcist. The 1970s original is a slow burn with a very deep story so don't fast forward through the slow build up. It is still nightmare inducing...
8. It Comes at Night. A slow burn apocalyptic suspense most here will really like.
9. The Void.
10. The Shining. A slow burn of a man possessed and going crazy.
11. Jaws. The original, scarred me for life from swimming in deep water.
12. Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The original.
13. The Fly. The 1980s remake with Jeff Goldblum.

There could be some others to mention, like supernatural, zombie, or slasher films like original Halloween, Christine, 28 Days later and sequel, some of the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm street, and some creepy detective type entries like Seven and the Saw series that feature gore and puzzles. These are of varying degrees of good popcorn films but not true disturbing terror like the ones I enumerated... those 13 or so above left an impression on me that was very unsettling and creepy and you will enjoy them if you're looking for a great scare...
