Am I overreacting here?

Hey folks, here's a quick little story for you guys to mull over.

The wife and I made a trip to the 6th gate of Hell known as Wal-Mart tonight, after beating our way through the holler rats and dregs of society we payed for our items and began to leave (items consisted of Christmas decor, electronics, ammunition, and pictures from the photo center, all items had been payed for at different locations in the store and we had around 5 different receipts).

As we were leaving a greeter jumped from her seat and rushed over to us and our cart, she demanded our receipts and began to search through our bags, I politely asked the greeter what this was about and if we had set off the alarm (I knew we hadn't), the greeter refused to answer my questions and was still searching through our now payed for items, at this point a line of people had begun to form behind us, all trying to exit the store but could not because of the traffic jam the greeter was causing. She finally motioned for the line of customers to exit (they did) and asked my wife to show her all of our receipts that we had (receipts were in separate bags, and our pockets), my impatience and dislike for the human race finally got the best of me and I yelled at the greeter, saying "we're not doing this, we're not digging through these bags all night to show you receipts! We're leaving! Goodnight!"

The wife and I gathered our carts and walked out of the store, the greeter said nothing and turned to go back to her seat. This entire ordeal spent around 5 minutes and made us feel like common criminals. I was probably more patient then I should have been.

I've been fuming over this all night, not sure why really, guess I don't appreciate me and the wife being treated like we just stole the store. Is this a policy Walmart goes by, do they even have any authority to stop customers at the door and conduct a search?
