I own a .22, which gun to buy next to get into hunting?+Hunting tag question...

So I have a .22, shoot a few thousand rounds through it and got comfortable with it over the past year or so. I got a shotgun from a friend last week with a 28 inch barrel, took the thing out, shot well but I could not walk or maneveur with it easily at all, I am a small guy and the thing is just about as tall and big as me ha so I looked for smaller barrels, everywhere was out of stock so I sold it for more than I paid and now I have a little cash to buy a new gun.

I was just going to buy another 12 gauge but now I'm thinking I should invest in a 30-06? I was looking at the Savage 110 in that caliber. I would like to hunt eventually with whatever firearm I get next, I know people say a 28 inch barrel is ideal for hunting but I just do not feel comfortable with that thing seeing how small I am and how short my arms are, could I get a 20-24 inch barreled shotgun and get different chokes for hunting? Or should I invest in an 30-06? Or any other caliber/gun would be better as a "next" gun, stepping up from the .22 to hunt?

I am not interested in getting a pistol as I would like to hunt and my budget is somewhere around $2-$300 range.

Also another quick question, not trying to snitch out anybody or get anyone in trouble but I am super curious about this and I tried to ask but he ignores the question because of the obvious sensitive nature, I have an uncle who was convicted on some pretty heavy felonies about 6-7 years ago, did a few years in jail and now that he is out, he still hunts and gets his deer tags and what not. Do they just assume, when you get your deer tags, that you are able to own a gun? Or do they even do a check? I have no idea how he has been able to hunt "legally" these past couple years because I know he is still paying court fines and what not off but still gets his hunting licenses no problem.

I am ashamed that I am 26 and just now getting into all of this so forgive me if my questions are basic. Any answers are much appreciated and thank you:thumb:
