Modify an Esbit stove to make it more pot friendly

Having trouble using that cup on the ol' Esbit to heat up your dinner? Do you balance the cup on a partially closed stove - but worry that it will tip over? In searching the site, I did not see anything on this. A common problem, but a cheap fix is possible.

Thiss mod will allow you to use a USGI canteen cup or commercial cook pot on your Esbit without worry.

First - the problem:

This image shows the problem. The commercial cup (16 oz) is too small to be supported by the open Esbit burner. The parts in front are the fix.

This shows the spoke parts in place and one windscreen piece in place. Set up like this, you can burn wood to cook with as well.

With both windscreen parts in place. Very stable for USGI canteen cup or other larger cook pot.

And with the 16 oz commercial cup in place.

You should be able to dope out how to cut these items after looking at the photos. The windscreen material is a roofing patch from Home Depot, the spoke was obtained from the local REI bike repair shop just for the asking.

The sides are cut 2 inches high x 4 inches wide. I used professional aviation sheers, the sheet metal was no problem to cut. I suspect good EMT sheers can handle the thin metal as well.

The spoke was obtained free for the asking at the REI bike repair window and bent - cut to fit, and bent a second time.

The extra bit (w/yellow tag) can go under the stove if you worry that burning fuel will drip onto a finished surface.

Esbit tabs burn hot enough to make the spokes glow orange.....

Hope this helps you update your kit to make it more cooking friendly.
