Setting up 2 Boafeng UV5R to communnicate to each other

I know the answer is simple but If you are like me and new to communications it all looks Chinese..I did some homework thanks to help on these boards and decided to buy 2 boafeng uv5r handheld radios. My plan is only to communicate with pregnant wife in a SHTF scenerio. I purchased 7.5" external antenna, my GRMS lic...I live in NYC in the outer boros...There is a repeater I plan on hitting between my home approx sea level and where I work which is 150ft above sea level..I need help programming...PLtones..plus minus, etc...I am lost. Thanks
