Survivalist Reading, Timeless Wisdom

Here are some lines that are very sage:

From my grandfather... I learned good morals and the government of my temper.

From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character.

From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich.

From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.

These words, my friends, though applying directly to our times now, were written nearly 2000 years ago, by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, from his work The Meditations.

This book touches the soul, with the true practice of stoicism. It calms the nerves, strengthens the will, and, most importantly in these hectic times, quiets the unquiet mind.

Here's the librivox audio edition, read most excellently. It can be downloaded for free and is great for long drives or before bed. I hope the thoughts and wisdom of Marcus Aurelius give others as much peace and patience as it has me.
