I missed the Duke's birthday yesterday

He would have been 110 yesterday, May 26.

Having watched John Wayne movies for seven decades, I always try to remember him:

• John Wayne was a larger than life figure even from the beginning – when he was born, he weighed a whopping 13 lbs.!
• John was born with the name Marion Robert Morrison on May 26th, 1907. His parents liked the name Robert and decided to use it for their next child so Marion’s middle name was changed to Michael. Studio executives in 1930 gave him the new name of John Wayne.
• He had the same nickname as his constant companion, a proud Airedale dog named Duke.
• John received a football scholarship to the University of Southern California (USC). But a bodysurfing injury, which cut his football career short and ended his scholarship, led him to acting.
• John Wayne has been in 175 movies total. Out of those 175 movies, he was the lead actor in 142 movies - which is more than any other actor.

I think my favorite movie is The Searchers but his cavalry movies are pretty good also. The Shootist was a great way for him to say goodbye to his fans.
