Fruit tree problems

Does anyone know what causes unripe fruit to fall off the trees before they are ripe? We have several different types of mature fruit trees ( apples, plums, apricots, peaches, cherries) and this is the first year we are living here when the fruit are on the trees. The cherries are not falling off, the peaches neither, but almost all the plums are off, and a lot of the apples also.
Apricot blossoms froze, so no apricots either.

Also, do you have any suggestions on how to get netting over a large tree so the birds don't eat the cherries?
