Ticks!

So with the rise of tick populations in the mid west, I've finally noticed them becoming prevalent in my region. Hardly a fair weather day afield passes without finding at least one human-born tick and more than likely multiple ticks on our k9's.

I've done a little reading and it looks like most authorities recommended two modes of prevention. 25-30% (or greater) deet or covering with long sleeves and pants tucked into socks.

Now, I've always been a shorts guy and tend to prefer them greatly. As middle age and associated sweating/charging set in this is only affirmed. For biking and well groomed trails this is fine but for days of exploring I would likely opt for pants.

What does everyone preference for tick prevention? Has the deet spray been effective? I hate to military appearance but perhaps blousing pant legs would become prudent? I've picked up ticks on surprising cold days but would be most interested in shorts-wearing and k9 prevention options.
