What was Trump's "COVFEFE" strategy?

A couple of days ago, President Trump used the acronym COVFEFE (Commend Objective Verified, Effing Enemy Fully Engaged) while referring to the way he was being assaulted by a dishonest mainstream press.

In response, press organizations the world over locked arms and marched in lock-step in their accusations that he had made a gaffe, using a make-up or misspelled word, and blamed it on alcohol, drugs, senility, incompetence, exhaustion, etc.

Upon realizing that the dishonest press were being dishonest about the meaning of the Tweet, President Trump sent Sean Spicer out to state that it was an inside joke among the senior administration. This is true, but it sounded like a facile excuse or downright lie.

Why didn't President Trump go to the nearest podium, or even just to his Twitter account, and catch the media in their lie?
