I am finishing my basement this winter, putting up foam insulation, 2x4 walls, and drywall. In a back corner, nearly completely covered in soil on two sides is where I will have my root cellar for canned, dry foods and other Tier 1 preps. I an thinking of walling in the root cellar with cinder blocks filled with concrete for the remaining two walls to enclose the shelter. Has anyone done this? Is it worth the effort to do this?
Second option: Wall in the root cellar with standard 2x4s, insulation, and drywall. Keep a few sheets of OSB in the shed on standby, prop up the OSB on the exterior of the root cellar inside walls about 4 feet from the actual root cellar walls, and then back fill in the 4 foot space with soil as quickly as possible once a device is detonated. This second option would take a full day by myself.
