$1-$2 Hunting Safety Collars for Dogs

Hunting season has arrived and everyone around here is keeping a close eye on their dogs. Was at the feed store and they had beautiful orange safety collars for $9-$10 bucks.

Realized mine were all wearing old mismatched collars due to dogs losing them, tearing them up etc... and five of mine really needed upgrades. Instead of spending $50+ bucks on store bought collars. I ordered $10 of supplies online and have enough to make 10+ collars. I always toss old collars in a box in case of a lost collar, to reuse the hardware, or if a stray/rescue shows up and needs one.

Got 20 feet of 1" webbing, 5 snap closures, and 5 adjusters from strapworks.com for only $10.86 including shipping. Went with "heavyweight" polypropylene webbing (which is fairly thin, but could be doubled for a thicker collar) in orange, advertised as UV resistant and won't stretch when wet. http://ift.tt/2zNSSxM

I had some D rings and reflective strip from previous projects. If you are reusing the hardware from and old collar this project would cost you less than $1. If you prefer flashier collars with patterns just pick up some 3/4" decorate ribbon and sew it onto the webbing.

If you do not have a sewing machine you could sew these by hand (there isn't very much stitching involved) but obviously the stitching will be weaker so I would not walk a dog or restrain a strong dog with a hand stitched collar.

Which turned these sad looking old collars into a matched set:

One tip -- Have an old finished collar to use as a model, don't cut them all up before making new ones. You have to sew the adjuster on first then thread the prong side of the closure and it is easier to figure out with a model to copy.

Made 7 new collars and have enough supplies for a couple of more. Even with the new hardware it is coming out to about $1 each. Will give one to the neighbor dog as well.

I don't really like the look of the reflective strips, but do add some for those dogs that are a bit more unpredictable and may find a way to slip the fence, also makes spotting them with a flashlight in a dark yard much easier.
