After drawing it out on the computer to see how things fit, we decided to go with 46'x76', 14' eves. Everyone told me that it's better to have a bigger/taller building than you think you need, as someday you may have the need.
I did my homework, and chose to go with a materials kit from EPS. I had looked at Morton, and also a few builders who would go with local lumberyard packages. I liked the overall "system" that EPS offers. It seems strong, well thought out, and is designed and certified for certain wind speeds, and snow accumulation.
What I also found is that materials seem to be significantly more expensive than what I have been reading about from members who built pole barns 7-8 years ago. A kit that includes all the lumber, metals, pre-fab trusses, screws, bolts, windows, barn-style doors...was well north of $30K.
Now I also know that labor tends to vary greatly depending on the demand in a particular area. Certainly the "5 Amish guys built my barn in a week for $5000" doesn't seem to be available in my area. What I've received for construction costs has been closer to $18K. Concrete may set me back close to $18-20K.
What are you guys paying for their pole barns today?
I'm going to frame in about a 25'x25' workshop area that I'd like to insulate. I've been doing some research, but I'm open to any good ideas about insulation. Does the labor savings of spray-foam insulation offset the higher cost?
What about heating and cooling? For heat in the workshop, I was planning on just using a basic propane heater to keep things warm when I'm working, and maybe some electric heat to keep the shop area above freezing (maybe 45) when I'm not. For cooling, I was thinking just a squirrel cage to move air.
This is all very new to me - I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks!
