Has Anyone Planted Fall Potatoes?

In my wanderings online I came across an old article from Backwoods Home about planting potatoes in the fall. The only clues as to when he plants them are that the last of the summer vegetables have been harvested and that there are fallen leaves to use in the trenches and as mulch. October?

A different article on fall planted potatoes says that they are planted in hot weather in the South. Well, here September's pretty hot.

Both articles say to use whole potatoes as the hotter weather tends to rob cut pieces of energy.

Has anyone here tried this and if so, were you successful? What would you say would be the pluses or minuses? I'm thinking of experimenting with it this fall in a raised bed.
