Say you leave your house and come back to an inferno?
Do you have contigencies if your home is lost to disaster?
I just came home from shopping and smelt plasticy smell in the air.. I was pretty sure there was a fairly large fire nearby. So after going in to check on my flat mates and told them to close the windows and keep aware in event it is very close I started jogging around the neighbour hood.
I found one house with smoke coming from the top, but it was just the exhaust... so I continued jogging and as I was nearing it, I heard the sirens, and continued to jog and noticed that atleast the first floor of the place was engulfed with 10foot or higher flames.
since firefighters were now on scene I opted to jog around the block to determine the extent of the fire, it was right next to a church that was in service. I told people that were starting to gather outside to take off unless they needed to be nearby because house fires have toxic fumes. After i jogged around the block, small block all tightly packed properties with lots of brush, I headed around the corner back to my place.
Really unfortunate, I am thinking they lost their home within 3o minutes, probably a total write off.
None the less, I thought I'd take the opportunity to remind people the dangers of house fires. You may have all the food and water in the world but if your house isnt fire safe, and unless you have contigencies for storage, like storing stuff at friends and families houses you have all your eggs in one basket.
Just be mindful, these little things, little disasters are ones that happen to people day in and day out. If your are prepping for the end of the world, atleast be sure you are prepping for a house fire. Not only to prevent it, or fight it, but if you loose that battle or arn't even there to fight it.
This was just a wakeup call for me that disaster can strike at anytime. This is the second close call for disaster in less than two months, the last was the tornados that struck and I got caught on the road in the middle of a windstrom/tornado power outage type event. This stuff happens just be mindful people, this stuff happens so if you prep make sure you prep for what can happen where you are, what is likely or possible to happen. Common events are way more likely than rare ones.
Its also important to recognize the signs... no one except for me knew what was going on on the street and the nieghbourhood. Except for the person who called 911. People were out standing in toxic fumes without even realizing it until they were reminded that house fires have toxic fumes and you don't want to be inhaling that stuff. There is a fire station down the block so probably good call in terms of time.
