How to maximize production from a low flow well?

Our mountain house well struggles after periods of dryness. We pump into a cistern to maximize storage. Would it be better to pump the well dry every hour (as currently configured using a smart controller) or let it rest for a longer period (4, 12, 24 hours)? Thanks!
