Our biggest wide-spread threat is probably our $21 trillion debt, growing at a trillion per year in stable times. It's unsustainable. And at some point, it will collapse if not corrected. Those corrections are unpalatable now. But they will be forced upon us.
"Mad Max" is really just humans debased to their core survival instincts. Banding together in groups for survival, executing violence of force or action for offensive or defensive purposes. Lawlessness.
In America, if you add up all the police and law enforcement and military, it's maybe 1.5 million. Vastly outnumbered by adults with guns. In a dire situation, say the dollar collapses tomorrow, it would take about 3 days for total panic to ensue. You'd see violence and attrition on catastrophic levels. If uncorrected, millions of people would die in a few months. First year, mortality could be enormous. The old, sick, those needing drugs, special equipment, the weak...
Without reliable food, oil, gasoline deliveries, energy grids down, unattended fires, no law enforcement, no courts, etc. things would go south in a hurry.
Go watch the opening montage of The Road Warrior. Eerie similarities to what we see today. Turn on the news. Threats of terrorism, widespread rioting, threats of war around the globe, lots of nuclear armed nations, oil shortage concerns, energy shortages, fresh water shortages, violence in the streets...
It's unlikely, but not impossible.
Mad Max type world isn't likely...
