I bought a Saiga .308 years ago and did the conversion to move the FCG forward. I also changed the furniture around. I have only 8 magazines (8-rd up to 25-round, polymer and CSS Specs). Those damn mags are expensive!
I wanted an RPK-style rifle with the 30-caliber punch, so I went with the .308.
I have the opportunity to build an RPK in 7.62x39 with a buddy who does so for a living. He is very good: Childers Guns LLC.
If I had to sell the Saiga .308 to get the RPK kit and new barrel, etc., do you think it is worth the exchange? I paid $450 for the Saiga .308 and put about $200 into the furniture and conversion, totaling about $650. Not including the magazines, what could I expect to get out of it in very good condition? I hear the value went up due to importation ban.
Would you sell the Saiga .308 to build an RPK? If you include the price of the RPK build (which is just parts, no labor) with a new barrel, would I make a return on the Saiga .308 and have money to spare to get a ton of mags?
I like the idea of using a .308, but 7.62x39 is everywhere and an RPK can use cheap mags and drum mags. I won't ever shoot more than 300-400 yards here in WV, and I have other bolt-action rifles better suited to the 300-700 yard range.
I'm leaning towards the RPK. What would you do?
