Well that was interesting

Day one of deer season for us, day three for the rest of the people.

Long and humorous story short, ended up hitting my deer with a 75gr Hornady Match JHP at 15'.
Yea that is fifteen feet.

Sorry for the lack of pictures but I wasn't expecting to shoot at the time.

The bullet entered the left leg, low and through the shoulder, crossed the chest shredding the lungs and fragments were lodged just under the skin through the right shoulder.

I had originally intended to use the .300 BO but grabbed the .223 because of the scope on top, glassing the area.
Still wish I had grabbed the .300 as I had started walking, but I'll be blunt, the 75gr bullet did more damage than I have seen from a .223.

The left leg wasn't just broken or damaged, it was brutalized. A 3.5" exit hole on the back side of the leg and a good 1" entry hole made me concerned about the meat. I needn't have worried, it was as I suspected, the meat was ruined, at least the bottom half.

As I no longer gut big game critters,
I can't say more than the lungs were destroyed, coming out the right side of the ribcage in small chunks.

With 4 more deer to take this year, probably 2 will be taken with the 75gr bullet, and I will admit that I am more impressed with this bullet than I was last year.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
