Propane stores forever as long as you can keep it in the can. Doesn't work so well at 40 below (or less) unless you can warm the tank.
As far as it goes the most expensive power you will ever buy is the stuff you generate. Having power for a few days or weeks is really nice. Gives you enough time to empty the freezer by consumption or pressure canning. A propane turkey fryer burner is what I can with.
I lived on generator power for weeks at a time in the Army. A remote kill switch is fairly reliable - remote starting, might be great for the 4 hours on 4 off cycle. If its been 3 days to 6 months since it ran, you should be there to start it. Fuel, oil lines or wire insulation can crack, critters can build nests next to exhaust system or chew on the wires.
