Anyone here know how ford power steering works?

I just bought a tractor (1941 Allis B) that has no hydraulics on it. I also have a loader that I can modified to mount on it. My problem is I don't want to spend money on a pump. But I do have several power steering pumps. The one I would like to use is off a Ford Triton V8. It has a remote fluid reservoir so I think it should work for this use.

What I need to know is how a ford power steering system works.

Does the pump only produce full pressure when it senses pressure is needed?
If it produces full pressure all the time can it be left at full pressure all the time or do I need a spool valve that allows the fluid to recirculate when pressure isn't needed?
