Depending on climate they will die back in colder weather and regrow when it warms up. So may not be a permanent screen.
Related to sunflowers, so if sunflowers grow where you are jerusalem artichokes will as well.
Stock will eat them, both roots and leaves.

And the tales are true, they do make humans very 'windy'.
