I'd go shotgun given those options. Mosins tend to be clunky to operate, and in my experience, honestly lack the accuracy to take advantage of the cartridge's ballistics. The Mosin isn't really great at food gathering, it's too slow for close range defense, and not precise enough for long range stuff.
For $300, an SKS would dominate either option. A 30-30 lever would be good too.
