Scaring Black Bears?

If they're not used to humans, they're pretty scared by your presence 99% of the time. Most of the black bear sightings I've had were big, black butts heading away from me at high speed.

In the rare cases that they're been more curious, yelling works. I did have to bop a momma bear over the nose with my walking stick when she tried to grab my pack.

But stand up tall, wave your arms, and yell. If that doesn't work, move to plan B.

Don't run. It can trigger predator/prey response and you won't outrun them anyway. Black bear can hit almost 40mph. And they climb trees just as fast, so don't bother with that either.
