David and Golliath

For most of my life, before I was a dedicated Christian, I always thought the story was silly and nonsensical. A giant warrior, of unrealistic proportions, killed by a kid with a rock from a sling.

A few years ago, I became a believer. Notably having studied that portion in the bible, and sat through an excellent sermon on the topic.

David had killed animals with the sling before, and was practiced. Golliath was said to be a very imposing warrior. Some estimates say 6', while others put him at an incredible 9 and 1/2 feet tall of muscle. That would make sense and is very believable. Clearly such a warrior would rise to the top of his profession and be the top dog. As a professional warrior he would have unlimited food and fitness. And that size/height is not out of question for humans. Here are some other notable humans ranging from around 7-9 feet tall.

It's clear to me that Golliath was woefully overconfident. David, with God's help of course, used a large stone. Golliath was not expecting it, but a stone to the unprotected head could easily kill or cause a concussion. That allowed David to walk up and kill and behead him as he lay there unconscious (or dead).

The story is not far-fetched at all, when you understand it. Now, whether he was 6'5" or 9'5" is largely immaterial. Obviously the biggest, baddest warrior would rise to the top, like in any sport. Regardless, he was such an imposing warrior that nobody would dare face him. And the point is that God used David in the most unlikely of ways with the most unlikely of weapons to prove his power.

Back to height, however. It's not unreasonable to think that Golliath could very well have been over 9' tall. Documented humans in history include many over 7 or 8' tall (there are 10 recorded men over 8' tall in history) such as:

Scores of freakishly athletic NBA players with many in the 7 feet realm, who dwarf average men.

The Rock who is a very muscular 6'5" 260 lbs former pro wrestler, stands next to 7'9" NBA player Sun Ming Ming

Edouard Beaupré – 8 ft 3 in, was a strongman who could lift an 800 pound horse!

Robert Wadlow 8'11"

So, not to get fixated on height, it's not impossible.
