One way the IRA capitalized on this was to post signs and advertise that there was sniper activity in the area. A simple can of spray paint, maybe a homemade stencil, could potentially do even more to keep unwanted people out of your area than throwing actually bullets down range. It could be advertised as far away from your BOL as you wanted, and the sign poster could remain completely anonymous. Maybe a good force multiplier in some situations. Not appropriate for everything, but definitely on the table for as an option.
With the amount of rifles in circulation, its a believable threat, and might direct people to avoid your area, or at least play a little nicer and think twice about their actions, with the feeling of being observed. I know the concept of posting signs is not new, but I'm focusing on the specific link between signs and the fear that sniping the unheard bullet causes, to aid in the effectiveness of using a sign. In the case of the need for real resistance it could act as an agreed upon code to initiate actual sniping activity against an occupying force. It certainly is suggestive if nothing else, which could be good or wildly dangerous, depending on the situation. So I would think long and hard before putting a sign like this up, and not be casual about doing it.
