Free speech does not mean consequence free speech. Free speech only means government is restricted from passing law about it. He is perfectly free to have consequences for what he said, like getting fired, like people threatening to harm him - and actually harming him. (I should not have to say this but I'll say it anyway. Assaulting him is not legal).

However, keep in mind that like a restraining order, a law prohibiting an act does not actually create force fields around a person physically preventing such action.

If the race where reversed, if he said Blacks should be killed, one can just imagine the BLM community committing all kinds of felonies AND the media saying we need to understand their rage, that their behavior is justified and we are to blame. Does anyone seriously doubt this?
