But what about the cheap knives you always see sold at convenient store. The ones advertised as keychain knives like this one. This is my EDC knife and it can always be found in my pocket, even when lounging on my couch at home. Plastic handle, Chinese stainless steel blade, cheap construction, not what most would even bother with as a glovebox knife.
But this knife has performed valiantly in my every day life. It has cut plastic banding straps with ease, sawed through heavy warehouse cardboard like butter, and cleaned the dirt from under my nails. It takes up little room in my pocket even without a pocket clip, closed taking up as much if not less space than my lighter. It won't be doing any heavy chopping or such tasks, but it more than makes up for itself by tackling tasks that even some high dollar knives struggle with.
The serrations mean that I don't have to worry too much about keeping it sharp for the multitude of tasks it performs. Should it ever break, which I have no doubt one day it will surely do, I can go to the local convenient store or hardware supply shop and pick up another for less than a five dollar bill. Or just order several dozen online for the same price or cheaper than most "good" pocketknives.
Not every piece of equipment must be of the highest standard, not to say it shouldn't be. But once in a while, take a moment grab a few of these the next time you can. As good as these are, they are a throw away knife. Something you could drop in the woods and not worry about going back for. Toss one or two into your BOB or GHB, perfect for every day use when you can't be bothered to put your good knife in danger of damage. Why chance ruining a $50+ blade when this will do and it's cheap and easily replaced. Don't risk damage to your good gear folks, buy that cheap and crappy knife and save your good gear for when your life depends on it.
Just my two sense, what's yours?
When one hears EDC knife...
