Biological chemicalprotection?

I know they are here somewhere but I can't find them. I'm looking for comprehensive threads on chemical and biological protection. Either that or educate me on this thread. Lots of nuclear info here but not a lot of bio/chem.

I'd like to know the kinds of filters/respirators/suits for an individual plus perhaps how to protect a shelter.

Limited capacity vs caliber debate

I'm not trying to start the typical 9 vs 45, or 5.56 vs 7.62 debate that I've seen. I also " hit the search button", but didn't see much of anything from this perspective on this board. So all being equal in number of rounds, which typically is used as the "tiebreaker" in most debates, do you think it worth the extra recoil/weight of the larger round? Please don't flame too hard
What state are you talking about?

As to caliber, I would suggest selecting one based on your requirements via MER, your own abilities at effective shooting in regards to perceived felt recoil, ammo budget, the various species of critters you want to bring down using one shot ( in relation to distance), the total amount of ammunition you are in shape enough to carry by the lbs, how different cartridges handle wind, what different cartridges can achieve vs barriers/ penetration, and deflection probabilities in thick vegetation. .....to name a few.

This goes for any magazine capacity, and especially any limited capacity.

Down sizing

Down sizing and relocating to the 'burbs.

Will have guns and lots of ammo to sell.

What would be the best way to do this? I have a friend that has a gun shop and an auction service.

Don't worry, I'll keep enough firepower around to make a good showing on a quarter acre lot in town.

Trip Planning Tips

What does your trip planning methodology look like?

What do you consider when planning trips?

I'm always trying to learn more and fully believe that proper planning prevents **** poor performance.

For me, I start with looking at weather conditions, terrain, elevation and distance. I familiarize myself with the area in google earth, via trip reports, USGS maps and finally in Gaia GPS.

I estimate how far we can travel each day by looking at elevation and terrain. Under 9k every 1000ft of elevation gain I count as 1.75 miles on flat ground when and above 9k, every 1000ft of elevation gain is counted as 2.25 miles. I estimate 2-3 trail miles for every mile off trail. Snow, mud, rain, etc all slow down travel and make things more difficult.

I look at water sources and plan out when/where I'll filter water and drink a bunch and if necessary, how much I'll carry with me. I try to stay very well hydrated but don't carry much water unless necessary to keep my weight down. Most of the places I hike and backpack have tons of water but if I'm in the desert I'm much more conservative with my estimates and carry more than I think I'll need.

I look at weather station readings for the past few weeks and historic weather ranges when planning what gear I bring. I typically try to give myself a 10-15F safety buffer for daytime and sleep system. If there's going to be snow I'll choose from either micro-spikes, crampons or snowshoes and I may bring an ice axe.

For short trips I'll pack a 3200 mah battery brick, on longer trips I'll bring a larger 10,000 mah battery brick. Short trips get the CR123 powered headlamp but longer trips get the 18650 powered headlamp. If there's off trail route finding involved I may also bring a long throw 18650 powered flashlight.

If I'm with friends we'll plan ahead and typically reduce the redundant tools like knives, saws, etc to save weight and space. I make sure that everyone's phones are up to date with cached maps and that we each have USGS maps and compasses of the area we'll be in.

Once I have the gear selected I'll choose what pack can comfortable fit/haul it.

I do gear checks to make sure that everyone is properly prepared (I've had a few trips ruined because of lack of preparedness). I'll also suggest items to swap out or leave behind if someone overpacks.

On my last trip we had a small guy about my size but lighter whose pack was almost 60lbs. At our night before planning get together/bbq I told him to leave a bunch of stuff behind and lighten his load. I got him down to around 40lbs which was still way more than I wanted him to bring. For reference I was at 22lbs. The trip was very enjoyable for me but he struggled the entire time and was exhausted. At the end of our trip when we got back to the car I picked up his pack to load it and sure enough, he'd brought the entire 60lbs. He spent the next week in agony and is still recovering from some of the damage it did to his body.

I try to stay in shape year round but if I have a big trip coming up I'll ease up on the upper body stuff and put more time in on the trails and working my legs. A multi-day snowshoeing trip will be brutal and potentially not feasible unless I prepare for it and work up to it by doing a few short snowshoeing trips a week for a month or more leading up to the trip. As I age I've also found that stretching and foam rolling has become more and more essential in staying lose and pain free so I'll really concentrate on that prior to any big trips.

That's just a little off the top of my head, what all do guys do? Gear, food, etc considerations do you make?

A Women's Right to Choose (Tree of Life)

Near the end of this outstanding video Cioccolanti opened my eyes to the concept that knowledge of good kills (if not done with God). It is extremely provocative so please forgive the provocative title but I wanted to highlight women (and men) have more than one choice, i.e., we can all choose the tree of life - even after rejecting it!

It is not merely a matter of knowing the difference between good and evil and doing good. It is about not choosing the tree of life. Cioccolanti received revelation, saying page 2 of the Bible sets up the rest of the story and points out the temptations of Christ were to do good, not bad, but to do good without God, or act contrary to the will of God for us to live in a humble and meek manner. Anytime anyone says they receive revelation and it makes sense to me, I pass it on. I hope this makes sense to you too.

Maybe this is obvious to many of you. For me, Cioccolanti really opened my eyes to how us choosing knowledge of good - and acting good (without God) - is the insidious will of Satan, as we set ourselves up to be judges, mini-gods. For instance, one could judge that sacrificing your life for strangers is irrational. Cioccolanti uses a woman in WWII who risked her life and sacrificed her life to save Jews during the holocaust. This was right because "rational" is not our God, God is our God and acting according to His will is right. Hope you enjoy watching this outstanding video.

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Bump Stock ban comment period has started

The bump stock rule is now written and comments from citizens can be submitted. If implemented, this is a true ban, which classifies bump stocks as machine guns! No grandfathering of existing items. They must be destroyed or turned over to the police, with no compensation for the taking of your property that was lawful when you purchased it. The penalty is up to $10,000 and/or up to 10 years in jail.

Regardless of whether you own a bump stock or not, or whether you love them, hate them, or are indifferent toward them, we need to oppose this rule.

The government is not providing a valid reason to suddenly consider bump stocks as machine guns. Their reasoning is clearly political and nothing more, totally failing the smell test.

In the proposed rule, BATFE brushes off the idea that firing a semi-automatic rifle with a bump stock is no different than bump firing that same rifle using only one's bare hands. Video can be seen here: http://tinyurl.com/ycb6lxto

Here's what the BATFE writes about the supposed "differences" between firing with a bump stock vs bump firing with your bare hands:

Quote:

"The relevant statutory question is whether a particular device causes a firearm to 'shoot ... automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.' 26 U.S.C. 5845(b)."

"Bump firing and other techniques for increasing the rate of fire do not satisfy this definition because they do not produce an automatic firing sequence with a single pull of the trigger. Instead, bump firing without an assistive device requires the shooter to exert pressure with the trigger finger to re-engage the trigger for each round fired. [PVC: "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" That's exactly what a bump stock does. Pressure from the trigger finger engages the trigger after each shot to fire the next one. With either method my finger stays stationary, while the gun bumps the trigger into my trigger finger and fires again. Nice try, though, BATFE!]

"...the bump-stock-type devices at issue cause the trigger to “bump” into the finger, so that the shooter need not pull the trigger repeatedly to expel ammunition."

"...Because these bump-stock-type devices allow multiple rounds to be fired when the shooter maintains pressure on the extension ledge of the device, ATF has determined that bump-stock-type devices are machinegun conversion devices, and therefore qualify as machineguns under the GCA and the NFA."

Click this link to get to the proposed bump stock ban rule:

https://www.regulations.gov/document...2018-0002-0001

You can read all the text of the proposed rule at this point, if you wish.

To enter a comment against the proposed rule, click on the blue "Comments Now!" button in the upper right corner of the page.

Suggested comments:

Quote:

"I fully oppose this ruling. The shooter's trigger finger is what activates the trigger, whether firing with a bump stock or with one's bare hands. No part of the bump stock touches the trigger, only the shooter's trigger finger. ATF's insistence otherwise is merely playing politics and hurts their credibility."
Or...........

Quote:

"I fully oppose this ruling. If the bump stock made a semi-automatic rifle fully automatic, then holding the gun with only the trigger-finger hand while squeezing and holding the trigger should cause the gun to repeatedly fire shots. It doesn't do that and therefore the bump stock has clearly NOT converted a semi-automatic rifle into a machine gun."

Shipping containers and emp?

I have a container sitting above ground. It is on metal skids. Parts of the floor are wood but there is a metal floor on both ends. I consider it to be a pretty good faraday cage. I have a pretty good solar controller stored in it and I keep solar panels stored there too. I put the controller in a 55 gal barrel. It is too tall to get a lid on the barrel so I covered the top with layers of aluminum foil. The barrel sits on the wooden floor of the shipping container.

Nobody knows what an EMP can do. I try to be reasonable. I do believe in layers of protection. A barrel inside a shipping container. The panel inside a plastic bag inside the barrel.

Saw the ad surfing the net last night.Clicked on it so fast I almost broke the mouse.
Reading the detailed description, yep,it was just the box,no gun.
He had about 10 other boxes between 100 and 300$...or 2000$ for the whole lot.
Well,I guess something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay..but seriously?
Maybe the original box adds some value to a collector, but that much?

I wont tell anyone how to spend their money, and a good deal is when both parties think they got the best end of the deal.
Personally,I don't collect high end guns, just utility guns.

Is it ever a deal breaker for you buying a gun not to have the box?

"Kinda"...

I've got a little over 1400 sqft of raised beds, (which if I were good would apparently be enough for 4 people... I'm not.)

And when I build my "forever house" I'll leave these and put in more.

But meanwhile I've berry bushes, canes, fruit and nut trees.
That's where I'm going for real surplus.

School assignment to pressure congress

https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/...er-assignment/

Students at Hampton Middle School in Hampton, Ga., were given a homework assignment that required them to write a letter asking lawmakers for stricter gun-control laws.

The seventh-grade social-studies assignment, a copy of which was obtained by Blue Lives Matter, stated:
“For this assignment, you are writing a letter to the lawmakers of the United States. The purpose of this letter is to pressure lawmakers to have stricter gun laws in the United States. Your letter should contain at least five complete sentences. Make sure that you use proper grammatical skills when writing your letter,” read the assignment given out by social studies teacher Corey Sanders to his students at Hampton Middle School.

Defaultu=0 ability to hit a man walking, 500m

if he's moving across your front, cause you can't tell how fast he's walking. His kill zone is about 9" wide. from the side like that. A 308 starts aa 168 gr hpbt game bullet at say 2500 fps from a 20" barrel, has a BC of .355 and is down below 1600 fps at 500 yds. Rough average velocity, then is 2150 fps. 500 yds is 1500 ft, so the bullet is in flight for almost 3/4 second. A man who's walking at 3 mph is covering 4.5 fps. so 3/4 second would require 3.4 FT of lead. What does that look like at 500 yds, eh? how much wind and mirage is there? what direction is it coming from? at what range are you zeroed? are you going to holf off or click the scope? if you zero at 500 yds, you're bullets will be striking over 2 ft high at 300 yds. What does that look like, over the head on prone man who hears your shot, drops prone and is shooting at you? Who says that there's only one? He could be in any direction from you, too. Your shot could easily call in dozens of enemies.. If he's actually moving at 2.5 mph or 3.5 mph, you''ll miss cause your amount of forward allowance is more than 9" off.

Finding A Co-Script Writer?

I am not much of a reader of fiction, even less a writer, haven't been to the theater since the 90's, but I do watch a lot of old and not so mainstream movies. I have lots of passing ideas for movies but not much beyond short daydreams, until recently... So I started trying to put an idea into an outline, and other than coming up with a few key aspects and possible scenes, I didn't get too far.

As a kid I liked Zombie movies but today they have been so overdone I can hardly watch a trailer without losing interest. I enjoyed the evolution of slow moving "zombie" zombies, from Night of the Living Dead, to Fulci's "Zombie!" to the turbo zombies of 28 Days Later and the remake of Dawn of the Dead yet I lost interest by the time Walking Dead came about and never saw an episode.

All that being said, I have come up with the be-all end-all, most horrifying zombie twist to end all zombie movies. I envision it as being better produced than say a Troma movie but still too graphic to earn an R rating and live up to it's full potential.

Is there a best way to go about finding a trustworthy script writer to collaborate with who can share same vision? I'm not looking for fame (prefer to remain anonymous) or fortune (though money is always nice) but I am confident that the right writer could at the very least have a cult classic on their hands. I cringe at the thought of seeing this movie on the screen, so it must have potential!

Obama administration was knee deep in tampering with the 2016 election

While the media has been occupied with Trump boinking a porn star over a decade ago, the Office of the Inspector General – who oversees the Department of Justice – just announced it will investigate possible surveillance abuses by the FBI and Justice officials related to the inquiry into Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 election.

"The Justice Department inspector general confirmed for the first time that he’s looking into whether FBI and department officials acted properly in obtaining a warrant during the 2016 presidential race to spy on a campaign aide to Donald Trump."

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...-on-trump-aide

It's been apparent for months now that officials in the Obama administration, primarily Samantha Powers and Susan Rice, improperly 'unmasked' Americans in order for the Obama administration to spy on political opponents:

"The Rice scandal is larger than either party's party line because it raises the prospect of abuse of the U.S. surveillance apparatus. A senior White House official can learn quite a bit about political opposition by unmasking the redacted names of U.S. citizens caught up in the routine surveillance of foreign targets. As I've written before, in the Obama years it looks like it was routine for senior government officials to request the identities of those Americans."

https://www.bloomberg.com/view/artic...-era-unmasking

Unfortunately for Obama supporters, the mainstream leftist media is finally beginning to notice just how corrupt that administration was, and the lengths it went to ensure Hillary would be elected in order to continue Obama's legacy.

Tick tock...

The Loss of Objective Truth & Objective Morals

I was tempted to put this in the religious section but it seems more fitting to be in the man-made disaster forum. This video highlights what Oswald Spengler wrote nearly a century ago, that a declining society is first seen in art. The video talks about the loss of objective standards in art. The same is true in our society at large about the loss of objective truth and objective morals. I even see it among the religious groups.

In fashion today is that everything is subjective, e.g., that might be true for you but it is not true for me. Reason has been replaced with rationalization. What is the difference between subjective and objective? If something is subjective, it depends on you, the subject of the sentence, e.g., "I like vanilla ice cream best." If something is objective, it does not depend on the subject of the sentence, e.g., "I learned that vanilla is a bean." The fact that vanilla is a bean does not depend on "you."

It seems the very idea of objective truth and objective morals is inconceivable, if not strongly condemned today. This is clear in dealing with petulant and rebellious youth. They say, that is your opinion but not mine. Revealed here is what I call THE PERVERSION OF EQUALITY. Not all opinions are equal.

  • If you are doubled over with stomach pain, a reasonable person would not value equally the advice of a gastrointestinal specialist with the advice from the local grocery store bag boy.
  • We did not get to the moon by building consensus among a multiculturally diverse group of social justice warriors.
  • Laser guided missile systems do not work because of the way you feel.
  • A culture cannot be sustained by the wombs of other women.

The paradox is while we are surrounded by technology that works based on objective principles, pop culture embraces a totally subjective world view.Whatever direction I face, is true north - NOT! Tied to this is the bad education where high school student and young adults no not understand the difference between "assertion" from "argument" or "opinion" from "fact."

We cannot even identify what objective truth is or what objective morals are if we cannot humble ourselves, get past the glory we assign to our own subjective ego's and accept objective reality exists. Failing to identify objective reality is a disaster for not only the upcoming generation but our civilization.

When To Move Chicks To The Chicken House

Chances are someone reading this article bought some chicks. They were brought home, put in something like a rabbit cage, also called a brooder, and that is where they have been for the past few weeks.

Some people have the cage in the main chicken house, and all they do is open the door. Chicks, being the curious creatures they are, will leave the cage and join the main flock.

Then there are people such as myself who have a separate brooder house for chicks. The house has a heat lamp, measures six feet wide and eight feet long, plywood walls, and a screened in floor. The new chicks are kept in the brooder house until they are ready to join the main flock.

Things To Do Before The Storm Hits?

Before we begin, let's define storm as any event which disrupts everyday life. For the sake of this article, a storm can be a literal storm, hurricane, tornado, wildfires, earthquakes... etc; whatever affects the readers geographical location.

In the following personal example, on the evening of March 28, 2017 a line of severe thunderstorms rolled through southeast Texas. The storms stretched from New England all the way to the Texas-Mexico border.

Knowing severe storms were on the way, there were things I wanted to take care of.

Passover Seder

DefaultPassover Seder

I think I posted somewhere before that our gracious local RCC opens its fellowship hall to the local Jewish Community (which describes itself as a hamish group) for meetings as it has no Synagogue. The son of an AG doctor friend of mine studied some with that Jewish Community to learn more about them and he will lead a Passover Seder in my friend's home tomorrow evening. It will be a small (two families plus me) Seder meal and I will sound the shofar. I am looking forward to it.

Retired justice Stevens confirmed the Second is right

Retired justice Stevens recent comments on repealing the Second Amendment reveal something about him. He is actually stating the Second Amendment is actually what it states, otherwise why the need to completely erase it? I think he found out that beating around the bush trying to justify restrictions, he decided that since it is really what it states, get rid of it.

I know it has been stated before, but too many people think this amendment gives us the right to be armed, but it really restricts the government from infringing on our right to bear arms. We now know that the truth is out, the people against guns want them all.

what spectacles to get?

After 20 years astigamatic myopic eyes which I never much bothered to wear glasses for I decided to get a few pairs. I have also lost some close range vision the last year or so- tiny writing is starting to look real tiny. My eyesight is just good enough to pass driving requirements unaided, but it effects hunting and general enjoyment now I have to admit.

Not much of a spectacles wearer I've never even owned sunglasses as a rule.

As such just wondering folks thoughts on what configurations to get that would suit general use, hunting, and worst case SHTF?

At this stage I am looking at choices of

1. Reading glasses.

2. Distance:
A. Polarised sunglasses
B. Clear lenses/untinted pair
C. Those UV reactive tint changing specs for indoors and outdoors. I have heard these aren't as useful in practice as they sound?
D Safety level glasses with polycarb/impact resistant lenses.
E. Bifocals- was also told by tradesman and other outdoors folk these aren't as practical as made out?

I can afford about 3 pairs. The reading glasses will probably make up one set. The other two are whatever 2 distance glasses cover the most useage...

Thoughts appreciated

Recommend a New fixed blade knife

Guys and gals, someone recommend a new knife for my collection. I am thinking of something around the size of the Gerber Strongarm (I already have one), or around the size of an SOG Sealpup.

I do not have an SOG Sealpup, so I am leaning towards one.

MOLLE adaptable is a requirement.

Please no Bowie or large survival blade style knives, I have plenty of those.

Does not have to be SOG.

I already have a couple of Schrade fixed blade knives.

Already have a Gerber BigRock and Gerber Profile.

Price, let's keep it below $75 please.

This is one I am looking at

gun control and the relative weapon lethality lie

A Glock pistol and a Bic lighter: both of these consist of a steel firing mechanism attached to a plastic handle filled with as much firepower as can be fit into it. But the Bic is capable of a much higher death toll, showing those trying to outlaw the other to be liars.

One of the biggest lies of gun control is that getting rid of this or that gun, or even all guns, will make people less able to kill each other, or at least less able to commit mass murder. This lie is easily disproven by pointing out that there is no historic correlation between firearm development and any increase in violence. People have been killing each other since Cain killed Abel. Wherever there was a will, a way was found.

And statistics of ways people are killed back this up. People use the best weapon they can get, which often is a gun, but enough people are killed without one to prove beyond any doubt that a gun is not necessary to kill people.

The lie about mass murder is easily disproven by pointing out that the biggest mass murders have ALL been committed with things other than guns. Examples of this include the arson fire at the Happyland Social Club in NYC in 1990 that killed 87, the Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168, and the murder by truck in Nice France that killed 86.

Why People Leave Disaster Prone Areas

Who wants to live in a disaster prone area? The honest truth is, no place in the United States safe from natural disasters. However, some areas are less prone to disasters, but overall nobody is safe.

For example:

California has droughts, mudslides, and wildfires.

Northern regions have blizzards.

Southern regions along the gulf coast have sweltering summer heat, tropical storms and hurricanes.

East coast is hurricane prone.

Central United States is known as tornado alley.

Then there are localized disasters, such as flooding along rivers, rock slides... etc.

So it is not a matter of avoiding disasters, it may be a matter of picking your poison. However, some people are at the mercy of disasters.

USGI Canteen Cup

I had the good fortune today to buy a USGI Canteen Cup at a Goodwill store for .99 cents plus tax.
It's the one where the handle snaps out from the bottom and can sit very securely on flat surface (not the 'butterfly' handle).
It's marked with the usual 'US' and a contractor mark 'W.C.W'.
Stainless steel, and I'm impressed w/ the quality.
This thing weighs 9.4 ounces, quite heavy for backpacking, but it is built like a tank. Could probably handle straight flames or on coals for hours with no issues. the word 'bulletproof' comes to mind. Holds about 20 ounces water to the brim. Due to the heavy construction I've no doubt it could cook stews, soups from scratch, etc.

BUT...the weight! I have an aluminum Olicamp nesting mug that also is 20 ounce H2O capacity that weighs less than 4 ounces. Titanium pots weigh even less. A 'Boy Scout' pot is similar H2O capacity and weighs less than 5 ounces, and it is an actual pot w/ lid.

You old GI Grunts that carried wool blankets, M1 Garands w/ 80 round 30-06 cartridge belts, canvas tents, etc. (my hats off to you) may think I'm a snowflake, but Good Lord, I'm 65 years old and need gear as light as possible.
Well, laugh if you want, but ounces make pounds. You try carrying those extra pounds up mountain trails and then tell me what you think.

But even so, I may carry the GI Cup. Especially if I were in the backwoods, where gear MUST last, where you can't easily replace items that failed. I might just walk slower.

Who's gonna build that wall??

Our leader is now saying the money will come from the military to build the wall across our southern borders.

Here's how that'll work. The Army Corps of Engineers will have a bunch of engineers and inspectors to monitor Union Contractors to build the wall.

I think that right there is at least one group too many.

Why not have prisoners build the walls?? Let the Corps manage the project (To which they'll charge the government 20% for doing that) and put the prisoners to work while teaching them a trade.

Then we need to look at other prisons in our country and how we can put those guys and gals to work.

We can have prisons do specific tasks such as:

Making Uniforms for Prison workers
Making bedding, mattresses, pillows, and canvas tents for use by prisoners
Teach one prison to operate heavy equipment such as front end loaders, dump trucks, etc..
Another prison can run a concrete or asphalt batch plant.
Several prisons can raise livestock, vegetables, fruits, wheat..
and so on and so on..

Prisoners don't gain anything by lifting weights out in the yard all day. They need to learn a trade. Once they get out with that trade, they could go work with the prison teams as supervisors, foremen, bus drivers, whatever..

If prisoners don't want to work, they can live off Sheriff Joe's diet of baloney sandwiches. No work, No TV, no Weights to lift, no wood shops to make furniture, no sewing shops to make uniforms..

We need to make prisons a place they DO NOT want to be at and never want to go back to.

I just Googled "How many prisoners are in US prisons." The number came back as 2,220,300 as being incarcerated right now. That's one heck of a work force.

Once we get that going, do the same thing for all the homeless people out there. Quit giving them places to live, free handouts, clothing, food, blue tarps. Have them clean the streets, paint over graffiti, pick up trash, build 1 room cabins so they can make decent looking homeless villages. Have a Mayor in each village to make sure things don't get nasty looking.

Maybe I need to write this suggestion to President Trump.

Any thoughts??

First Amendment Alive and Well

I go out to street medians and hold up a "Free Bibles" sign. You want it, you got it. I have been doing this over 8 years now.

Sometimes police drive by but today I had one stop. He said someone had reported me and he had to investigate, was I taking any money? I said no way and he said OK, carry on.

And I went back to handing out my Bibles.

There are 3 laws, as long as I adhere to them I am free to distribute as long as I want:
1. Don't take money!
2. Don't touch the cars!
3. Don't block traffic!

It is nice to know I still have the right to do this. I imagine the day will come when I can't, but I can do this for now and I take advantage.

Handed out 45 Spanish Bibles today, and 4 English.

Chevrolet 1500 differential..thoughts..?

I have a 2000 5.3 Suburban (9th gen). I had the differential rebuilt last year. Last week I discovered that the left side axle seal was leaking and I replaced it. The pinion seal is also leaking but, I'm ignoring it for now. These seals are a year old and installed by a great mechanic at a local shop. I inspected the ring gear and all the parts I could see for any wear or signs of excessive heat and found no issues.

I use this Suburban for towing my camper, 5800 dry, about 6800-ish wet.

What's your experience with the GM differentials in the 1500 series trucks, 1999.5 - 2006?

Dehydrated bananas after one year...

Did you dry them or seal store bought?

Vacuum bags are not long term storaege and if that is your plan use desicant to keep moisture down for pantry storage use.

Store bought banana chips are usually treated and sometimes steam oil flash dried with honey flavors.

The ones I have done, I dehydrated until extra crispy Like all my stored foods. They are then sealed in mylar with O2 absorbers. The one of several I have, I opened as a test they were as good as the day I put them up.

I have to be honest though the #10 cans are tasty.

Citizenship question to be added in Census

Haven't found this was posted yet (if it is, sorry...)

But the Commence Dept is saying they will add that question to the census. Of course, CA is threatening to sue as is Holder.

https://www.louderwithcrowder.com/ca...e-2020-census/

Trump wants the 2020 census to count actual citizens. As in people here legally. This is of course problematic for California, where the illegal immigrant industry is thriving. So of course, the Attorney General is suing...

Revisiting the Sub 2000

So Far I've owned an AR9, 2 Gen 2 Sub 2000s, Hipoint carbine, MPA defender Carbine, a Beretta CX4 9mm, and the New Ruger PC Carbine. However starting tomorrow I'll be the owner of Gen 2 Sub 2000 once again. This one will be of the G19 variety. I got rid of the first two because of the front sight issue but the word on the internet is that it has been fixed. I'm hoping that proves to be the case.

I love having a 9mm carbine especially one that takes Glock mags but have been having trouble finding the right one for me. I was all settled into going back to the Sub2000 until Ruger announced their new PC Carbine. I've owned it for several months and it worked flawlessly but it was just too heavy and I didn't like that it required tools to dissasemble. So here I am once again. Wish me luck.

Revisiting the Sub 2000

Hello, hope I'm in the right place

I know this forum is probably for people who have stable lives and the whole survival/prepper thing is a luxury of a hobby.
I'm actually recently homeless, living out of my car, and during my research into various related topics, a lot of answers were from this forum. Usually stuff related to people intentionally making do with very little, camping gear, etc, but nonetheless relevant to my situation.

Anyway, I hope to keep learning and one day maybe contribute.

Best fire extinguishers for various locations?

Hope this is the correct sub-forum. It was between this one and Urban survival.

In any case, I've been trying to increase fire safety around the house. I have a Badger 5lb ABC (standard ammonium phosphate), which is old, but still in the green. I read these were highly corrosive, but the best for all around use. It was in the kitchen, but I decided to relocate it near the laundry area and get something less corrosive for the kitchen.

For the kitchen, I picked up an Amerex Sodium Bicarbonate 2.5lb model. This is just rated for BC, but since most kitchen fires are cooking fires, then I figured it would be good. Please chime in if you think otherwise. My hope is that if there's a stove fire and I have to use it, it won't corrode everything like the standard ABC type.

I also decided I should put a FE in my car, so I picked up an Amerex Purple-K 2.5lb model. From my Google searching and reading car forums, this was the type most people seemed to recommend, except for those people with show cars, who said Halon or Halotron. I mounted it right in front of the passenger seat. It's not really visible when the seat is slid up a bit. Also, after reading more on purple-k vs. sodium bicarb, I think I may have done better to just get a purple-k for the kitchen as well. I tried to find information on which was more corrosive: purple-k or sodium bicarb, but to no avail.

Since I have some nice computer equipment as well as vintage electronics, I picked up an Amerex 5lb Halotron model for the computer room. I tried finding out what kind of damage a cheaper FE (like Sodium Bicarb) might do to electronics, but couldn't find much information. Obviously the ammonium phosphate models would be bad, but as for sodium or potassium (purple-k), there just wasn't a lot of information available.

Being in a 2-story house, I also picked up a fire escape ladder.

So this is where I'm at now with my fire safety. I'm considering a fire blanket, too, but perhaps that's overkill? In any case, I welcome input, critiques on what I could change, etc. Or just tell me I'm being way too OCD and will probably never have a fire and I should have spent all my money on whiskey.

Survival lessons from the race to the South Pole

Lately I had been fascinated by the explorations of Roald Admunson and Robert Scott in their race to reach the South Pole first. One team (Admunsons) made it there in superb time and back again with no fatalities or difficulties while the other (Scott) was completely wiped out to a man. So why did one succeed so well while the other became fatal? Some comparisons...

Admunson spent time in the northern wilderness and learned to dress in animal furs like the Inuit did for millennia, which adapted perfectly to the same cold on the other side of the Earth. Fur is waterproof and windproof, and it allowed sweat to evaporate. They looked like Yetis, but it worked. Scott OTOH wore heavy wool which was in common use in Europe, but which absorbed sweat and froze to the body.

Admunson used the Inuit method of dogs and dog sleds to move his gear. The dogs he used were bred for cold climates and readily ate the local walrus and seals shot by Admunson's team. Scott OTOH hand didn't understand dog sleds so he used a combination of ponies and motorized tractors. The food and fuel for both he had to bring with him from England.

Admunson travelled by ski and sled, essentially using the terrain itself to his advantage, and started off in a direction where he would have a mimimum of high altiture travel. Scott OTOH planned to have his team manhandle his gear to the pole and back, doubling the amount of calories needed to do the same work. Plus his length of high altitude travel was twice that of Admunson's and the thinner air wore his team out quicker.

Admunson picked people who had heavy experience skiing and with dog handling. One guy was even a carpenter and made the sleds lighter for the dogs. Scott OTOH left behind the only technician who knew how to maintain the motorized tractors so they broke down on the first day. the ponies had specially crafted snow shoes but his second in command talked him into abandinign them. The ponies narrow legs sank into the snow and slowed the pace down to a crawl.

Admunsen kept everything packaged for mobility. All items were in containers permanently lashed to the sleds. OTOH Scott would constantly tie and untie the items on and off his sled every time he stopped, which increased fatigue.

Admunson sealed his supplies carefully until he needed them. He had cans of fuel which he soldered closed to protect them from evaporation (a can left behind was found 50 years later and it was still full). OTOH Scott simply used the screw on cap that came with the can...which had a leather washer that allowed evaporation from the sun. When Scott came back to his depots he would routinely find his fuel half gone.

Admunson was heavily cautious about leaving supplies and markers behind. He would create a supply depot with large flags and then soe several miles on either side he left posts pointing in the direction of the depot. If he missed the depot in the snow he would definitely have hit the markers Scott OTOH left behind fewer depots and fewer markers where they were. He wound up dying only 11 miles from his next depot.

Admunson had a quality sextant that he used to navigate his way there and back. Scott used a complex wonder gadget for its time (forgot what it was called) which took longer to get bearings from.

Admunson was hard core practical in that he considered his dogs to be expendible. As they got tired he would shoot them and use them as food for himself and the remaining dogs. He left with 56 dogs and came back with 11, but he and all his people survived and actually gained weight during the trip. OHOT Scott thought that was animal cruelty and refused to even overwork his ponies (one reason why his supply depot was 11 miles too short; he didn't want to push them into the interior that hard).

The moral of the story? Use gear that works, test it out before you use it, and don't play pretend that things will somehow work itself out by chance. Go ahead and err on the side of paranoia concerning things your life will depend upon. Use what works, not what is fashionable. Pick a team of people you can rely on. Know the terrain and use it to your advantage. Use as much of the local resources as you can rather than your immediate supplies. When you have a plan, stick with it; changing it in mid crisis will give different results during the crisis.. Plus, when it's a matter of survival you will have a whole new code of ethics you normally wouldn't have. Best to accept that now.

The full text of the comparisons can be found here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compar...tt_Expeditions

FYI...Scott's corpse is currently under 75 feet of ice 30 feet away from where he originally died and slowly moving toward the sea in an ice drift. In 200+ years it will float out to sea in an iceberg. Mother Nature is a complete bitch if you don't take her seriously.

Democrat Daryl Fisher proposing murdering gun owners

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH9j9jY2w9s

Okay, so this Democrat Daryl Fisher is outright proposing and condoning MURDERING Americans!!!
How is this not raising some eyebrows?

Let's follow the "logic" shall we.

1) Gun grabbers stated goal is to end violence by banning guns.
2) To do so, they want to ban guns.
3) If you disagree, then their solution is to kill you.

So, Dems solution to ending violence is killing American gun owners because we exercise our rights???!!!! Um. What?!?!

This needs to be exposed and shared widely. THIS is what they want. They WANT a fight, power, and murder of dissent.

HVAC improvements for someone with allergies?

My wife is a chronic allergy sufferer and I'm researching options to improve our current forced air HVAC system. Allergy season will be upon us shortly. She keeps mentioning retrofitting radiant heat in the house but I fear the trouble and cost will be exorbitant, and won't do anything to help allergens once the A/C is on for the summer. So I was wondering what anyone has done to their own homes?

We had a HVAC tech. out for a checkup and he mentioned something called an Air Scrubber Plus. It seems they have 2 models - one the uses small levels of ozone, and one that does not. The cost for one of these units is $900 installed. As I look for information online, I find very little, or comments from many years ago. But as I continue to dig, I find products like this (https://www.trane.com/residential/en...aneffects.html) so I'm beginning to become overwhelmed by all of the supposed solutions out there to cleaning the air in your home.

Proper humidification is a problem in our house, so replacing the whole house humidifier is probably something we should do.

I change the filter regularly, and use the standard, cheap, disposable filters. I've read in numerous places that higher filtration filters cause harm to the furnace. The HVAC guy said to use the cheap filters, so I'm not sure that there is anything more I can do.

So I would be curious to hear what others have tried, what has worked, what is "snake oil", etc.

Thanks!
