What is the simplest, most basic way to navigate around outdoors?

Hi,
I've never navigated on foot in the outdoors before. So being a beginner, what is the simplest, most straight-forward and bare-bones basic way to navigate around the outdoors using only very simple, basic and minimal tools like a base plate compass, topographic map, pencil, plain paper and maybe even a simple, basic GPS receiver such as a Garmin Geko, eTrex or ForeTrex?
