Reading of early Hebraic worship it seems that it was a joyful worship of God centered around the feasts of God and the family celebration of Shabbat. With Greco/Roman influence there came a trend to attempt to define God rather than just believe in him. Also there came a trend toward denial of self where poverty and suffering were seen as virtues. Did monasteries rise out of this trend and what was the scriptural basis for abandoning the joys of the early church? Were monasteries a Christian invention or copied from pagan religions?
