ex-Maine governor on refugees

Maine's former governor on the effects on refugees to his state is just eye opening.

He covers both the illegals and those sketchy Africans that got dumped on the state by Obozo.

He basically says that because of these people coming in that Americans are being moved to the back of the line or getting dumped on waiting lists because the social services are being given to these newcomers instead.

Book Review: Longavina Street: Life and Death in a Sarajevo Neighborhood

By Barbara Demick
This book is a non-fiction chronicle of life on an urban residential street in Sarajevo, Bosnia during the siege of the city from 1992 to 1996. During the war, the mixed ethnic Bosnians fought against the Serbians for control of Bosnia. Serbs encircled Sarajevo and placed a hodgepodge of artillery in the hills overlooking the city. Demick is a journalist who rented a room in a house on the street periodically during the siege. The book is a straightforward tale of survival under appalling wartime conditions.

This book has a considerable amount of information of interest to preppers. Although it’s unlikely an American city will be besieged by poorly equipped foreign troops using Cold War era surplus gear, it’s possible similar conditions could be created by an extended off-grid experience in a medium sized coastal city that is partially resupplied from overseas.

Takeaways from the book include:

1) The residents of Sarajevo were completely unprepared for the war. Until the week the siege started, most believed the war could be averted and people went about their daily lives oblivious to the coming war. Almost no one had supplies or food stockpiled. When the Serbs moved into the hills around Sarajevo, many people rushed out and stockpiled FROZEN food which of course spoiled when the power was cut.

2) The Muslim controlled government seized firearms from the residents at the start of the war to prevent “terrorism”. The real intent may have been to arm the pathetically out-gunned Bosnian army. Either way, most of the residents lacked firearms during the siege.

3) Power, water and gas were generally unavailable although electricity and natural gas were occasionally available. Essential government offices such as police stations or hospitals had some electricity and people who “knew someone” could run wires from the buildings to their homes to pirate a few kilowatts.

4) Residents rigged up makeshift heaters and stoves and burned anything they could find including furniture and books. In the cold Sarajevian winter, temperatures averaged 40F indoors. Despite the use of unsafe heating methods there is no mention of carbon dioxide poisoning or widespread fires.

5) Hepatitis due to bad water was common although there is no mention of other serious disease outbreaks. Waste disposal wasn’t discussed although the sewer system appears to have been partially functioning even though the water system was mostly down. Residents bathed by pouring water over themselves while standing in a tub and by and large generally maintained hygiene.

6) During the first few weeks of the siege, life continued on more or less normally. When the shelling picked up, government services such as the ambulance service soon became overwhelmed. Despite the conditions, the police force, hospitals and fire department remained in operation throughout the war, although at diminished capacity. Schools functioned intermittently. Government workers were paid in nearly worthless Bosnian dinars but, other than those few able to leave the city, remained on the job.

7) Throughout the siege, foreign aid tricked into the city, so the residents had basic rations, even if sometimes they had to eat Vietnam War era biscuits supplied by the USA. Pre-war Sarajevians were apparently a portly group but their pre-war obesity may have prevented starvation. One resident’s weight reportedly dropped from 300 lb. to 180 lb. Despite the basic food aid, many residents suffered from vitamin deficiencies. Later in the siege, many people began growing vegetables in their yard or purchased chickens for eggs.

8) By and large, the residents of Sarajevo behaved themselves. The author doesn’t record any instances of rioting, looting or other serious criminal behavior although there was a black market. Residents shared small amounts of rations with widows and old people. I’m not sure Americans would behave as well in a similar situation.

9) There was a major baby-boom during the siege. I guess people had nothing else for entertianment.

10) The Bosnian economy collapsed and the Bosnian dinar became nearly worthless. German Deutsche marks became the only accepted currency. For reasons not explained, American dollars were not accepted as currency. Prices for non-aid goods such as cigarettes, candy bars and fresh fruit soared to levels out of reach of the average person. Prices fluctuated wildly depending on aid shipments and the degree to which the Serbs enforced the siege. There was no mention of gold or silver being used as currency even though Sarajevo had a tradition of gold smithing. Cigarettes were used at times as currency.

This book should not be considered a “must read” for preppers. It doesn’t contain detailed instructions for surviving a semi-off grid situation in a major city but it does show that large numbers of completely unprepared people can survive a prolonged SHTF situation with some outside help. I bought my copy for about $10 on Kindle. The book was a finalist for several major literary awards so you can probably borrow a copy from a larger library. It’s worth reading if you have time.

VZ.24 with Type 13 bolt

I picked up a VZ.24 for $200 recently. Decent bore, ok stock. I didn't look as closely at the bolt as I should have. Took it to the gun club and shot some 8mm. The first few rounds fired, but then I started getting light primer strikes. Decided a new 24lb Wolff spring was the thing to do.

My Wolff spring came today. I started to take the bolt apart ... hmm, that's weird, where's the thing you push up to rotate the shroud? Well, there it comes, and ....

... Instead of a firing pin with spring, what came out was a firing pin in a metal sleeve. The spring was inside the upper part of the sleeve. I pulled the spring out. It came in a larger piece and a smaller (1-inch) piece. I then got my new spring and compared. The old spring is much smaller in diameter than the K98 spring.

I remembered something about Chinese Mausers (really Austrian Mausers, but purchased by a Chinese warlord) having some oddities in their bolts along these lines. After some Web searching, I believe what I have is a Manchurian Type 13 bolt in a VZ.24 gun.

While it seems strange on the surface, I can imagine how it might have happened. The combloc loaned a lot of WWII guns including VZ.24 Mausers to allies and satellite states, some of which were in Asia. And, China being Communist, it's entirely likely that the viet kong or other client group had Type 13 and VZ.24 Mausers, and did some mix and match from what they had. Or, it could be a more recent mixup of milsurp parts in or on their way to the U.S. market.

Anyway:

1 - Is this configuration safe to shoot? Now I ask, after having shot several rounds before the spring broke. (Maybe the spring broke for a reason, though.)
2 - If yes, what spring do I need to replace the broken Type 13 firing pin spring?
3 - If no, any suggestions for what to do? I could sell the Type 13 bolt and buy a different bolt, and hope it headspaces ok ...

Thanks.

how would you euthanize your dog?

Default

In my years I've put down a few pets including a cow, she was tasty. Like others have said I'd rather do it myself, peaceful and without strangers to excite your pet. Some can do it other can't, yeah I leaked a few tears over past dogs but Life is what it is. I haven't had a Dog in a couple years, the last one I had was poisoned by a neighbor I cant prove he done it but I'm pretty sure he done it, either way he's a bastard like that and he's lucky there's laws against taking a 2x4 to some body's head.

Colt HBAR vs Colt M1A4

Hey guys trying to look at the differences in the two rifles. Looking at adding a 20 inch AR to my collection soon.

Buds has the Colt M1A4 for about $1050. All the reviews I have read are good.

Local gun shop has what they call a post ban HBAR in 556 with the Colt scope on the carry handle and an unusual flash suppressor on it for 1200 used.

Any reason one is better than the other? I’m leaning towards the M1A4 since it is new and cheaper. Just wasn’t sure if the HBAR is that much more accurate to be worth it.

Appreciate the feedback.

America will be embracing socialism soon as the people don't see any other alternativ

On another forum they mentioned how people are not having enough kids to replace the population. Well, they can't afford them. America has made it soo hard to raise a kid, college and all. Then you have the crazy medical costs. Kids are for millionaires or illegals.

America will be embracing socialism soon as the people don't see any other alternative. Be honest, with the robots taking the jobs and more and more people ending up homeless, why wouldn't they? They will never get a penny from the reps, so they look to the dems. The reps only support the rich. As a price to pay for handouts, the dems will take their guns and hand out gov cheese.

The reps are really delusional. They say don't tax the rich, they will make more jobs. All the rich do is buy more production in China or invest it in stocks, bonds, RE or whatever.

You know all our illegal problem is due to greedy capitalism. Most profit, cheapest labor = illegals. Same with China and with all out jobs going overseas. The thing that most rich don't understand is they have to go out in the world once in awhile, the world that their greed has destroyed for the vast majority of the population.

In the old days the reason America was America was, there was no China and no illegal problem to speak of. It was All-American production and jobs.

America as we have known it is gone. America has an impressive façade of skyscrapers, but when you start looking beneath the exterior it is a mess. America was built on a Ponzi scheme, a scheme of constant consumption and never ending growth. Sooner or later the Ponzi scheme blows up.

Sure, you will still have successes, rag to riches story in America. But after the robots kill off 40% of the jobs, these Americans will be happy to be able to afford living a closet and being able to buy some dog food to eat...and it will prob me made in China too.

I mentioned medical costs in the beginning. Let me give you an idea of how things have changed in America before healthcare wad a greedy, big biz operation. When I was a kid in the 1960s I cut my hand. I went to the emergency room in L.A. I got 2 stiches. The bill was $20. A lady told me last year she slipped at home, hit her head and cut it. She went to the emergency room. They put in 2 staples, gave her a cat scan and sent her home after 3 hours. They sent her a bill for $7,000.

If we were ants or bees we could be good communists. But self-centered humans can't do it, greed, ego and a natural power hungry inclination to try and control others and keep them under your thumb preclude humans from being good communists. Well, we will have to see how it all turns out.

We saw what the dems gave us for 'socialized medicine' last time around. A heavy fine for not being able to afford exorbitant healthcare costs. The greedy American healthcare system will never want their golden calf killed-off. They can print $$ by creating whatever costs 'they say' are the costs. If you wanted to do socialized medicine you would have to have it exist alongside the greedy American system 'to be American.' But the greedy American system would lose too much $ and won't go for it - they want a monopoly. Plus who would run it??? Our politicians are ALL incompetent.

... maybe we can hire China, Cuba or Mexico to come over and do our medical for .10 on the dollar?

Facial Expressions

I'm no good at poker. I have stopped people a lot bigger than myself with a look -- trick I learned and perfected from my days as a bartender. People, especially people of a certain persuasion, are not accustomed to being called on their behavior. Of course there is always the chance someone will call my bluff one day and I'll get my ass handed to me on a platter. Guess I'll deal with that if/when that day comes.

Still, if I can avoid a confrontation, I'll take the low road everytime. I'd much prefer an easy out for everyone. My ego is non-existent in that regard. But if I'm stuck I'll fight like a cornered cat.

An Aggie walked into a bar and orderer a tequilla and a beer. He drank the beer and poured the tequilla on his right hand. Then he ordered another round and did the exact same thing. This went on for a few more rounds and finally the curious bartender said ,"Son, I'm not trying to be nosy but why the heck are you drinking your beer but pouring the tequilla on your hand"? The Aggie held up his right hand and said "Mister, this here is my date tonight and I'm trying to get her drunk."

What does Son of Man really mean

Jesus called Himself the Son of Man 83 times in the 4 Gospels. What did He mean. There is a two fold answer.

Jesus was referring to Daniel 7.

Quote:

Dan 7:13* I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.*
Dan 7:14* And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.*
One like unto the son of man. He looked like a man but actually was the Son of God, the Messiah, Jesus Christ. The Jewish scribes and pharisees would have understood this meaning.

When Jesus calls himself the son of man 83 times, He is claiming to be both Human and God.

The Humanity part of Jesus is required for Him to be the Savior of mankind. Lets go all the way back to the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were the ancestors of all mankind. Everyone inherited the sin nature from Adam.

Quote:

1Co 15:21* For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.*
1Co 15:22* For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.*

Quote:

Rom 5:12* Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:Rom 5:19* For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
According to the Bible, sin entered into the world by one human, Adam, and all of his children and progeny, humans, inherited the sin nature from him.

Jesus was not part of Adams inheritance as the sin nature is passed from the father to the children. Adam was the first human with a sin nature and passed it down to all. Jesus was the first human (God in the flesh with a human mother) without a sin nature (completely righteous) and passes that down to anyone who trust Him and believed He died on the cross, was buried and resurrected. Mary had a sin nature from her father but could not pass it to Jesus, else Jesus would have it and would not be sinless, righteous and would have to pay for His own sin. He could not have then been the Savior. Jesus had to human to be able to pay for human sins. But not His own because He is righteous.

Quote:

Joh 1:12* But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:*
When someone believes, they become a child of God, Jesus's progeny if you will

So Jesus emphasized His humanity by calling himself son of man (a reference to Daniel 7 as well) to underscore His ability to pay for human sin. The Jewish pharisees and scribes would have understood the Daniel 7 reference and would have become more incensed because Jesus was referencing His Messiah-ship and humanity each time He called Himself "son of man."

So when He did use this term, He was not indicating He was not God.

2Ti 2:15* Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Check it out yourself.

If the cold has you asking what about global warming...

...you just don't understand the argument that climate change scientists are making.

In a complex system such as our planet's weather patterns, there are various causes and effects. Climate scientist argue that if the overall temperature of the entire planet increases, that change could cause lower temperatures in some parts of the world. This makes sense as a theory.

The reason I don't give the theory any credence is lack of evidence linking human activity with global climate change.

Cold weather does not mean global warming is not happening...it's actually evidence that it is....or could be happening.

The facts in question are what is causing it?, is it normal?, is there anything we can actually do to affect it either way?

Greetings from Argentina

Hello there,

I'm glad I'd found this community. Looks solid and full of savvy people.

I'm from Argentina and I work as an Information Security Consultant for a US-based company. I have a few years of expertise attacking systems as a whitehat. Occasionally, I get to do physical security assessments where I look for physical flaws, try to break in, and then explain how I did it. I'm a good guy helping the US from the bad guys out there.

Also, I'm a newbie prepper looking forward to learning and to share my knowledge with y'all. Currently I'm researching about house security to improve my own security. As the saying goes, 'the tailor's wife is the worst clad'.

Thanks for reading

Emergency sleeping bag and cold protection.

Default

I keep a Zero degree sleeping bag in the back of my SUV all winter long. I got stuck in a ditch on a snowy back road in my early 20's, and had to spend most of the night and early morning in my truck. This was before cellphones became prevalent. Finally, at around 3am, my father came looking for me, knowing which roads I would have taken to get to my destination. I didn't have anything but a couple of carhart coats with me at the time. It was a cold night. That sleeping bag I now carry with me in the winter would have made my stranded situation much more comfortable.

Saw this news article and thought to myself it was only a matter of time.

In my experience, Taxi Cabs have always been ex-police cars with a partition separating the driver from the passenger.

I have to admit, I got stuck overnight in Chicago 2 years ago flying home to Springfield MO. I missed my connection as I got stuck in customs. I called a buddy and asked I could spend the night at his place.

He's like sure, just call an Uber. I got a taxi instead as working overseas, I'm behind the times on most of this modern stuff, and don't have Lyft or Uber loaded on my not-so-smart phone.

Question for the forum - do you Uber / use Lyft? Have you ever used this service?

Tactical Assault Kit for Android

Did a search of this site via google and found only one reference to this, mentioned by Bogeyman in the Minuteman thread.

To summarize, it's an Android app that provides real time updated map data of location of teammates and has a bunch of other features, including being able to draw things on the screen that other teammates can see. I can see a lot of value for this if SHTF, depending on the situation.

I'd guess that not a lot of people have direct experience with this except cutting edge SF guys or really big police departments.

Who knows about this? And what would be a civilian equivalent? Because I don't think any old joe can just get this.

Here is an article about it: https://www.militarynews.com/peninsu...1ca7ce899.html

Here's the wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Androi...al_Assault_Kit

Here is where I first heard about it (at about 15:00 into the video):

Getting back into prepping

Start with weapons if needed. At the minimal get a pistol, ammo and a good knife

Then get your bob together. Start with covering fire, water and shelter. Look at many other lists for other good items, but always start with square one.

Next build up tools you'll need. Axes, hatchets, shovels, etc. As well as regular tools.

Then a second firearm and ammo. A long gun or shotgun would be best. Then I'd get a machete or two or another blade

Then stock up on food and water.

I'm in the same boat myself more or less.

Opinion: Do We Owe Glock a Debt of Gratitude?

Sometime around 1979 or so my dad took his Smith & Wesson Model 66 357 magnum out of the truck and showed it to my brother and I. We were at the deer camp for a weekend of hunting, and I was 11 years old. The blast and recoil of the 357 magnum left a lasting impression.

As a high school graduation present mom and dad bought me a S&W Model 66 just like dads; it is one of my most prized possessions. At the time just about all police officers carried a revolver. Dad told me it was because of reliability and the power of the 357 magnum.

A few years later, let's say around 1984, a buddy of mine showed me his dads 1911 - with his dads permission of course. We went behind the house and fired off a few rounds. If I remember right, the 1911 was a Colt and looked pretty beat up.

Overall I was impressed with the 1911. It held seven rounds in the magazine, and one in the chamber for a total of eight. Besides holding two rounds more than the S&W Model 66, it was easier to reload.

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?

I will answer first saying that there is no Angel on the head of any pin but if God's wills it He can put them all there and still be left with some spare space.

Using an example from the modern science: if the whole Universe can exist in a place smaller than an atom and after the Big Bang can go as large as the dimensions it has now, then this is a good argument for my answer.

Morakniv Craftline 746 Knife First Impressions

In this article, we will be looking at the Morakniv Craftline All-Around 746, and talking about our first impressions. Why first impressions rather than a full review? This gives us time to use the knife around the farm before taking it into the field. It also gives us an idea of how to attach the knife to MOLLE webbing, backpacks... etc.

According to the Morakniv website, the company offers knives with three different types of steel - Carbon, Stainless, and Laminated carbon steel. Some descriptions on the stainless knives state they will not work with a ferro rod fire starter. From my tests, the 746 throws a spark just fine with my ferro rod fire starters.

No Trespassing Warning Signs

Just a simple "no trespassing" should work. 'Or be shot" sounds a little overkill.

In Texas you can paint your gate, and the corners of your property, purple and it means no trespassing. Anyone wanting to enter your property (utility worker, for instance) must knock on your door and get verbal permission.

I wish I could do that for my subdivision house!

Hybrid Solar/Traditional Septic System. Will it work?

I was looking at someone's solar composting septic system. Basically, you poop and pee in something like a bucket, then release the contents into an outdoor septic which has glass panes and a vent on the top to allow the sun to evaporate the water. According to the author, water levels never rise remotely high enough to be drained in a drainfield. It evaporated the water so well, that after 7 years of use, he only had 1" of solid matter at the bottom (if I recall correctly).

I love the system, however, I want to use a flush toilet, and I'm not sure if evaporation will go at a rate fast enough to evaporate the additional water in a flush. So, I came up with a hybrid system I'd like your opinions on:

When you flush your toilet the contents enters the solar chamber, and drops into a fine mesh basket to contain the solids, allowing the sun to evaporate the water. Excess fluids then exit the basket mesh into a traditional septic system. Note that the hybrid concept (image) was quickly created, so it's not perfectly configured, but the solar chamber should open up at the top to allow the basket to be removed.

I image some solids will enter the traditional septic, however, the amount should be very little that when it's time to pump out the contents it will be many years into the future.

Having never seen (smelled rather) it in action, I truly wonder the magnitude of smell..

Dog booties

Since the heavy duty ballistic dog booties are such a PITA/time consuming to put on my GSD, I just tried the Pawz Rubber Dog Boots dog booties for a potty trip outside and I am very happy. Easy to use and after about 5 seconds with the first one on, the dog ignored the rest. They don't look like they'd last very long on a walk (look like a medium duty balloon), but I'm thinking good for the multiple potty trips every day in the snow with the frigid temps . They came 12 to a pack, so I'm guessing they do rip without a lot of provocation.

I would hate to frostbite my dog's paws, both because of suffering and the vet bill Pretty easy way to prep/prevent

The store was out of large, which is what is recommended for GSD, so I got XL and they worked well

Hope this helps someone else.

Makes me glad I’ve got a couple of preps...

It was the Black Friday problems we had in the uk a few years back that really got me prepping.

Seeing people fight in stores over a cut price tv...

Made me think what are people going to be like when it’s food and water that is in shortage?

So...

Brexit: Defence staff could be redeployed in no-deal scenario https://bbc.in/2SawvyG

With the predicted food shortages and now that redeployment business in the face of brexit, looks like in a couple of months, i’ll Be hunkering down to weather out that little storm...

Signs of shtf to come?

See you back on here once it’s blown over lol.

.44 cal AR

I work for AutoMag and I have seen the .44 AMP in action a lot. The parent case is a .308 case that is cut down and a .44 put into it. This round working in a semi-auto without the worry of rim lock. I have seen the IWI Desert eagle have problems with the ammo shifting in the mag and jamming up. For me its to much to keep checking the mag and hoping it fires.

But the long story made short. I thought of the .44 AMP in an AR format. A modded AR10 barrel and mag would work. I saw there was a company that made custom uppers for it. But I am wondering on a more massive scale how many people would like it?

I see it being cheaper than .458 or .450 due to the fact that .308 brass is everywhere. For home loaders that is.

This is all just to see what is out there in numbers of people interested. May have to talk to the boss man and get a prototype going.

We also talked about making a full stock version of the pistol. Keep the design just make it with a fixed stock or folder.

I am just looking for some insight from the people who would maybe buy one.

Shelter 5' Underground - How to support lateral and vertical forces?

I want to build a shelter myself to live off-the-grid in Terlingua, TX (mild desert climate, no zoning or building codes) that is 50' length x 11' width x 12' height (these are interior dimensions), but I don't know how to build the exterior structure to support the lateral and vertical forces 5' below the ground. I'm trying to build the structure to be the most affordable, cutting cost wherever possible. Since I will be personally building it, the cost of labor is excluded.

I'm considering any and all ways of building the structure, including: earthbags, reinforced concrete, timber, metal, or a combination of materials. To control moister, I am planning on encasing the entire shelter in pond liner and underlayment. Directly over the shelter, I will also lay out plastic sheeting to redirect the water outward and away from the structure.

I was considering earthbags (with rebar and barbed wire) with gravel footings, and a reinforced concrete bond beam and roof slab because I could extract gravel from the property for the footings and concrete (if I were to make the concrete) to reduce cost, but I don't think the land has 30% clay, and 70% sand for earthbags as deserts are usually sandy.

Any suggestions on how'd you do it (affordably) to support the vertical and lateral forces 5' underground?

RTL-SDR Portable Listening Station

A while back I saw a thread relating to Software Defined Radio and surmised that it's theoretically possible to build a kit that will allow one to monitor a wide array of frequencies, while also allowing the computer operating the system to record data about what it "hears", meaning that someone won't necessarily have to monitor it 24/7 to avoid missing something.

Right now I'm going back to school and (hopefully) starting a part time job within a week. I hope to get my HAM license soon but I'd also like to set up this listening station too when time allows.

I've done a lot of research and succeeded in hopelessly confusing myself. I know I need an RTL-SDR USB dongle, but which one? I'd like to monitor HAM, CB, MURS, GMRS and FRS, in addition to aircraft and emergency services transmissions.

The second item is the computer aspect. I've read that some tablets can run SDRs and the related software but it kills battery in a hurry. I'd like for the computer component of the system to be compact and ruggedized, with at least a reasonable battery life. At least compact enough to load into a vehicle, I'm not going backpacking with the thing. The computer component can be dedicated to radio use, but if has the spare capacity to do other prepper stuff in the boonies that's good too.

Third is the antenna. I've gathered that if you're receiving only and not transmitting, antenna length is less important. I'm not worried about this aspect yet as the first two would need to be addressed first.

Any help at all, especially concerning SDR, is much appreciated.

Opinions on induction cooking, please

I’ve grown to hate our Jenn Air and would like to try an induction cooktop, but I don’t know how well they heat. All of our pots / pans are rated for induction. Do they heat high / quickly, etc.?

Help.....please

Honestly, I hate any form of electric cooking. With that blanket statement out of the way I'll compare regular electric ranges to induction.

Induction cooking requires more specialty cookware and is a less durable surface than I feel comfortable with, but it does cook better.

Being rated for induction doesn't automatically translate to being the best choice for an induction top. Be ready to buy a few more pans built with induction in mind.

Think of it as more difficult to get started with at the outset but you'll prefer the ease of cooking and cleanup once you get rolling.

Just be prepared for the learning curve and equipment shakeup. Be sure to exploit this great bone you have tossed to the missus. It's like a thousand brownie points, imo.

Forum participation seems down

What has caused this decline and what can be done to improve this forum? Am I wrong is participation down? If so why? Is there a business model attempt to take the forum in a different direction?

I do not have a dog in this fight and have no clue about what generates revenue. I have just assumed it was numbers of viewers and participants creating ad revenue.

If someone knows what the profit structure of such online forums like the Survivalist Forum please inform us.

Anyway one way or the other I think response to this will be telling.

Three Types of Crops Preppers May Want to Consider

In this article we are going to discuss three types of crops preppers may want to consider. Hopefully, this will provide the foundation for starting survival seed stockpile.

With so many seeds why just three? It would take a book to discuss even a portion of the crops we could grow, so let's start with just three.

Tilting a shipping container on its side

Default Tilting a shipping container on its side

I am planning to buy a couple hundred bare root trees to plant on some property that I bought recently. I would like to grow them in pots for a couple more years to make a them a little more hardy - protect them against rodents, deer, etc. I was thinking of buying a shipping container and cutting 3 huge sections of the side out (about 80% of the side) and then turning it on the side so that the cut out side is now the roof. I can use it as a green house and then when the trees have matured, I can tip the container onto its bottom and use it for the intended use - half of a utility building, mated with another shipping container. Would this work?

Russian bomber breaks apart on landing

Tail strike would rotate the airframe down onto the mains pretty hard. The forward fuselage is a cantilever beam, and it snaps from the sudden overload.

Maybe also hot, but we don't have anything for a baseline to judge.

Was it a short runway? He might have been putting it down as early as he could to avoid over-running the end, given all that snow. God knows I endured quite a few "carrier landings" when US Scare was flying 727s out of Green airport in Providence, RI. If you over-ran runway 04 you went through a Burger King 200 yards across the perimeter road.

SHTF, killer mini drones? Possible?

No specific prep than I can think of. General defensive preps seem like they would be enough. If you can keep birds out of your house you can keep drones out. If your out in the open your screwed but that has always been true.

The usual, "live hidden in the middle of nowhere" seems to work as well for this as anything else.

Certainly would be a big problem if you where targeted and didn't know about it.

Luckily power storage is a giant bottleneck for this kind of technology so any attack wouldn't last long before all the drones becomes inoperable.

Food Storage/ Cold Cellar

I'm looking to partition off a 12'x16' section of my basement to create a food storage/ cold cellar. My current dilemma is my basement floor has radiant heat in it. The zone isn't turned on, however, if the wood boiler for some reason begins to overheat the floor is the "dump zone" to drop the heat as quickly as possible. Two sides of the storage will be exterior walls (poured wall in arxx forms) the other two and ceiling will be framed and insulated. I will be putting a cold air intake and exhaust in through convection, one at ceiling height and the other at floor height. My main concern is the floor build.

I'm contemplating on whether I need a vapor barrier between the concrete floor and the floor joists i.e. plastic

Next should I use pressure treated for the floor joists, after 9 years since I poured the floor will it still retain enough moisture to cause a problem?

Should I use faced or unfaced insulation in walls, floor, and/or ceiling?

I was hoping to build the entire room out of rough cut from my mill.

Using stone at your BOL

I was wondering why no one talks about using stone at your BOL?

In this part of MO, it’s all rocks and red clay. Rocks are the biggest crop.

If you’re buying “raw” land, you will have to cut a driveway in, and clear a spot for your new home place and out buildings. After all the equipment gets done(stumps, very basic leveling), you will have rocks all over. I’ve “chunked” more that 1 field. And you haven’t done any foundation and septic work yet.

Or your buying a established place that’s half woods and fields. Just wait till you bush hog the first time or cut hay. You will be picking up rocks. The land patent on this place was dated 1878(or 9?). And the farmers have been throwing rocks into the woods ever since.

Do you have a creek on your new property? Then you have some flat stone also, to go with all the field stone you have been picking up. And after every good rain, there will be more.

Which do you have more of, money or time?

Rocks are a real pain to deal with. I’ve been digging, picking up and moving, and making piles, for three years now. They have to be handled many times. They are free, but not cheap in terms of time, labor, tools for shaping and cutting, and hours of studying different types and styles of stone work.

Can or do you use rock/stone work at your BOL or retreat?
