Moving into rental property

I'm looking at moving out of El Paso and putting the house I have there up for rent. Considering that I most likely wont be anywhere close to it, it seems like the smart thing to do would be to get a property manager, and most seem to take 10-15% of monthly rent as their commission.

Is this normal, or the smartest way to handle it? If this goes well, I'd most likely look at moving into multi family housing complexes later on.
