“Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the liberation of those who had been held as slaves in the United States. Originally a Texas state holiday, it is now celebrated annually on the 19th of June throughout the United States, with varying official recognition.”
Ok, so I understand wanting to mark the end of slavery, I honestly do. But I admit I’m confused.
It’s called a “celebration” (via wiki) but it doesn’t really seem like a unifying idea. At best it seems like just another hammer blow to division in our nation.
Blacks will celebrate no longer being slaves but will Irish, Asian, and a number of other ethnicities? Would they be allowed?
And how are white people supposed to participate? Feel guilty? Have a “we freed you” party?
And what about the blacks who are descended from black slave owners? What do they do?? Apologize? “Oops, my bad!”
Maybe there is some way to turn this into something good, something unifying instead of polarizing? A teachable moment or a rallying cry for the fact that slavery still exists elsewhere in the world? IDK.
So let’s discuss this “holiday” and see what thoughts are out there.

Juneteenth???
