Would like a new pistol/revolver 1k or less. What do you recommend?

Get a duty sized (medium framed), service caliber revolver in stainless steel. ~4 inch barrel. Caliber can be whatever floats your boat, but .357 is arguably the most useful & practical. Since you can also fire .38 Special loads out of it.

I'd go with either a new Colt (reintroduced King Cobra), S&W (K or L Frame), or Ruger GP100... but there are a hell of a lot of superb used models of those brands.

My favorite all around, do everything, bombproof combat/field revolver would be a used pre-lock S&W Model 686 (versions 686, 686-1, 686-2, 686-3, or 686-4); 4" barrel; six shot; similar in form to this one:

The full lug barrel and beefy L-Frame are stout/heavy enough to handle copious amounts of full house .357 loads... or any flavor .38 Special fodder as if they were cream puff target loads. The stainless finish is rust resistant and easy to polish out minors scratches/scuffs. The gun has an excellent trigger and sights.

In 4" length, it's still portable for CCW, but long enough to get a good powder burn and velocity... without huge muzzle flash. Very accurate and enough mass to handily tame violent .357 recoil. Perfectly adequate for hunting medium game (deer sized) if your state doesn't require a longer barrel. This was a gun that filled cop holsters for decades.

It's a visually handsome design that'll bring a smile to your face every time you shoot it. Good re-sale value as well. In case you ever decide to trade/sell into something else.

The Model 60 is a gun that you'll rarely enjoy shooting .357 out of. It's really not big enough (frame size) for the Sturm und Drang of hot .357 loads. Yeah, the gun is chambered for it, but your hands/wrists will hate the recoil. The original Model 60 was a J-framed .38 Special gun. From 1965 until 1996. Smith strengthened the design for .357 after that, but the gun is a handful to shoot in that chambering.

Lightweight, short barreled .357s Brief Well. But they are a literal pain to shoot. Difficult to manage in rapid fire. Heavy blast, muzzle flash, and recoil. Which is why most just stuff them with +P .38 Special for actual defensive carry.

If you want something for carry that's in between the bigger L-Frame and the too-small J-frame, try Smith's classic K-Frame Model 66:

The shorter barreled 66 versions go for a premium, but nice used 4" 66s or 686s can be found for ~$650.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
