Best over-the-counter heartburn meds?

Lately, I've been having some really bad heartburn, 3-4 days a week, sometimes to the point of being unbearable. I add a calcium supplement to my water that kills the heartburn, but the combination of the acid and calcium seems to have a side effect that is at least as painful. So I am going to try some kind of medication that'll prevent acid production in the first place.

So, what actually works?
