Best Placement of 2 x 4 Across Door?

If someone tries to kick your door in, I think below the door knob would be best.

Learn from my mistakes.
Screws/lag bolts, 1/4” and larger, can split a 2x4 wood door frame, if you don’t drill lead holes before installing the lag bolts.
Two bolts close together can also split a piece of wood.
It is easy to screw this up, no pun intended.
You probably have two 2x4 boards around the door, try to not screw between them, but screw directly into one of them, or best one bolt in each of them.
If you split the wood or screw between the boards, your brackets will pop out with a little force, and you will only have a false sense of security.
If you have drywall, probe the wall with a very small nail to find the exact edge of the board, then install your lag bolts in the center.

In my opinion 5/16” x 3” or 3 1/2” long lag bolts would be the best bolts to use.
3/8” could weaken the board, 1/4” could be a little small.
