Something else you might consider with children in the household is a quick-access handgun safe, using either a code or fingerprints.

When my kids were younger, I had one of these mounted inside a cabinet in my basement workshop. The kids didn't even know it was there, and it required a simple 6-digit press of the finger buttons to pop open. At most it would take 3 seconds.

I felt the key was that A) the kids didn't know it was there so there would be no curiosity about it, which an exposed quick-access safe might create, and B) I could get it in a hurry.

I do like the interior locks, though. Under the adrenalin rush of an attack, opening my quick-access safe might require two or three fumbles. Time to think, even just a couple seconds, is invaluable.
