These Motorola's are pretty handy, if you talk on the FRS you're range isn't great, but you can get a GMRS permit for $50iirc & it's good for 10 years & that can potentially get you more range.

These Bao Feng's offer a lot for the $. They have a dual band & tri-band version. This dual band has 3 power settings up to 8W.

The BaoFeng radios you'll almost always want to upgrade the antenna unless you get one that has a kit with a good one. They technically aren't legal to transmit on, even on the FRS as it has a removable antenna & can transmit at power levels greater than allowed with FRS. Of course transmitting on HAM freq's requires a license anyway. If you set the power level to low & don't act like an ass, you should be fine using them for 2 way on FRS without getting in trouble, but of course, you shouldn't.
